The call

Thermax sits on record orders and rising AI-driven cooling demand, with its bio-CNG losses the main drag on an otherwise steady industrial business.

Thermax makes equipment for factories, power plants, and now data centers. It is hard to replace because it has 60 years of know-how, thousands of installed machines customers depend on, and special chemical recipes competitors cannot easily copy. Its main rival is BHEL, but BHEL focuses on huge government power projects while Thermax serves mid-sized factories, so they do not really compete. The biggest question is whether Thermax can fix its struggling green-fuel business, which has been losing money for two years and is the weak spot in an otherwise strong company.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data center buildouts are boosting demand for Thermax cooling systems, feeding the business rather than eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BHEL. BHEL is far larger by market cap but sells utility-scale mega-project boilers, leaving Thermax's mid-market industrial niche largely untouched. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Decades of installed base, chemical IP, regulatory know-how and 16 factories across 90+ countries that new entrants cannot copy quickly.

Q1 FY2026-27 results (~July 31, 2026) show Green Solutions/bio-CNG segment profit or loss. Whether the bio-CNG turnaround is real or losses keep dragging on group profitability.
Order backlog (record ₹13,604 crore) converts to booked revenue over next 2-3 quarters. Whether Thermax can execute on demand rather than just accumulate unfulfilled orders.
Data-center cooling orders beyond the one disclosed US order become publicly named. Whether the AI-driven data-center capex opportunity is materializing into real contracts.
