The call

Thesis's headline benchmark lead lasted about four months before better-funded rivals passed it, and the three-person team now competes against peers funded at 30 to 1,000 times its size.

Thesis built a tool layer that sits on top of AI models like GPT to help them write and fix code. The problem is that OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are all building this same thing themselves, and they have way more money, people, and direct access to their own models. Thesis has no special data, no customers locked in, and no way to distribute that these giants cannot copy or build faster. The one thing that could change everything is if Thesis's own AI benchmark score stays better than what the big companies achieve with their newer models over the next year or two, but that looks unlikely given how quickly the gap is closing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Rival autonomous-research agents: AIBuildAI, CAIR MARS+, MLEvolve, PiEvolve. These agents passed Thesis's MLE-Bench score of 48.44% with 60%+ results within four months, erasing its main claim. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic. They own the frontier models Thesis wraps and built MLE-Bench itself, and could fold this agent layer into their own products anytime. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders' pedigree (Google X, Nvidia, Stanford SAIL, a $250M fintech exit) helps raise money but does not protect the product itself.
What would change this call
Thesis closes or fails to close a priced seed round within 6 months. Shows whether Thesis can raise capital comparable to peers funded at $300M-$550M.
Thesis regains and holds a top-3 MLE-Bench ranking for 2+ consecutive quarters. Would show Thesis can defend its technical lead against better funded rivals.
Thesis announces a signed exclusive research partnership with a named institution. Would show real customer lock-in beyond a thin layer on frontier models.
Key numbers
  • Team size: 3 people (2026-06-09)
  • MLE-Bench score 48.44% (Any Medal), ranked #1 (2025-11-10)
  • Rival Periodic Labs raised $300M seed (2025-09-30)
Named risks
  • Core benchmark claim already superseded by better-funded rivals as of March 2026. Severity: high
  • No proprietary data, customers, or lock-in disclosed beyond a thin orchestration layer on gpt-5-codex. Severity: high
  • No priced seed round disclosed beyond YC funding as of June 2026. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Thesis profitable or generating revenue in 2026?
No. As of the February 2026 YC launch recap, Thesis reports no revenue, no customer count, and no named commercial logos, describing only unnamed 'collaborations' with institutions and researchers.
How big is the Thesis team?
Thesis lists a team size of 3 as of June 2026, per its YC job posting for Member of Technical Staff, roughly a year after the company was founded in 2025.
Could AI replace Thesis's own product?
Possibly. Thesis automates ML research itself, but rival systems like AIBuildAI, CAIR MARS+, MLEvolve and PiEvolve had already surpassed Thesis's MLE-Bench score of 48.44% by March 5, 2026, showing fast capability compression.
Who is Thesis's biggest competitor?
Better-funded AI-scientist rivals like Periodic Labs ($300M seed, Sept 30, 2025) and Lila Sciences (~$550.7M total funding by Oct 2025), plus Sakana AI, all outpace Thesis's YC-only funding and 3-person team.
Is joining Thesis a safe career move?
Thesis is an early-stage, 3-person, YC-only-funded startup as of June 2026 offering $120K-$170K salary and 0.75%-2.00% equity, with no disclosed revenue or priced seed round, indicating high-risk early-stage employment.
Who owns Thesis?
Thesis is privately founder-owned, backed by Y Combinator's Fall 2025 batch with YC partner Tom Blomfield listed; no independent priced seed round beyond standard YC investment has been publicly disclosed as of June 2026.
