The call

Tieto is cutting itself down to a smaller, more profitable core while its consulting business keeps losing ground to AI and bigger rivals.

Tietoevry is a Finnish company that sells software and consulting services to banks, hospitals, factories, and other big organizations across Scandinavia. It is hard to replace in specialized areas like banking software because those systems run critical daily operations and customers are locked in by regulation and switching costs. However, its general consulting business is easier to copy and is already losing work to AI tools and to larger rivals like Accenture and Capgemini who do the same thing globally. The company is shrinking on purpose, selling off pieces and cutting costs, which suggests management sees the consulting side as doomed and is betting everything on keeping the specialized software units that competitors cannot easily steal away.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI coding and design tools (GitHub Copilot-class agents). Tech Consulting revenue already fell 7% organic as AI tools let clients write and fix code without hiring Tieto staff. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Accenture, TCS, Capgemini, CGI, Sopra Steria. Bigger IT services firms undercut Tieto on price and scale in the same Nordic consulting contracts it is shrinking out of. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Banking, Care, and Industry software runs inside regulated core systems that are expensive and risky to rip out.
What would change this call
Tech Consulting organic revenue trend in Q2/Q3 2026 reports. Continued -5% to -7% decline would confirm AI is displacing commodity consulting work.
Whether Tieto announces another divestiture of Banking or Care units within 6 months. A crown-jewel sale would show shrink-to-quality is turning into disassembly of the moat.
SpareBank1 contract renewal or extension news by Q3-Q4 2026. Its absence would signal erosion of Tieto's core banking relationship moat.

Questions people ask
Is Tietoevry profitable in 2026?
Yes. In Q1 2026 (reported 2026-04-29), Tietoevry's adjusted EBITA margin rose to 14.7% from 10.6% a year earlier, even as revenue fell 5% to €448 million. The margin gain came mainly from a cost-cutting program that had delivered €105m of a €130m savings target, not from top-line growth.
Could AI replace Tietoevry's consulting jobs?
Tietoevry's Tech Consulting unit (custom software, design, engineering) is the segment most exposed to AI-driven compression. Its revenue fell 7% in Q2 2025 and it was again flagged as facing the 'most significant challenges' in Q1 2026 (2026-04-29), suggesting AI is already eroding this business.
Is Tietoevry laying off employees?
Headcount dropped from 23,833 (June 2024) to 14,693 (September 2025), a roughly 37% year-over-year decline, driven mainly by the September 2025 Tech Services divestment (~7,230 employees moved to Agilitas/Vivicta) plus separate cost cuts under a €115-130m savings program.
Who owns Tietoevry (now Tieto)?
Tietoevry, renamed Tieto Oyj after shareholder approval on 2026-03-30, is a publicly listed company with no controlling parent, triple-listed on Nasdaq Helsinki, Nasdaq Stockholm and Oslo Børs. It has been actively divesting units rather than being acquired, including selling Tech Services to Agilitas for €300m in 2025.
Who is Tietoevry's biggest competitor?
Analysts cite CGI, Sopra Steria, Capgemini, DXC Technology and Fujitsu as closest Nordic-region peers (as of 2026-01-03), while global consultancies like Accenture, IBM, TCS and Infosys compete adjacently, especially pressuring Tietoevry's Tech Consulting arm through AI-driven pricing and productivity gains.
Did Tietoevry change its name to Tieto?
Yes. Rebranding from Tietoevry to Tieto began in November 2025, and shareholders formally approved reverting the parent company's legal name from Tietoevry Oyj to Tieto Oyj on 2026-03-30, with the ticker and ISIN unchanged.
