The call

Toshiba's regulated infrastructure businesses give it cover from AI disruption, while its future hinges on a private-equity turnaround and a relisting date that is still just a target.

Toshiba makes everything from nuclear reactors and elevators to computer hard drives and power chips for factories and data centers. The company has real advantages in businesses the government relies on (like nuclear power and rail systems) and benefits from AI demand for storage and semiconductors, but it is harder to replace than pure tech companies. The big risk is that Toshiba is currently owned by a private investor (JIP) and promises to go public again sometime after 2028, profits look better than they are because of one-time cash from selling stakes in a memory-chip company, and a money-losing subsidiary keeps dragging results down.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI data center buildout is a tailwind, not a threat: it lifts demand for Toshiba's nearline HDDs and power semiconductors. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Western Digital, Seagate (HDD); Infineon, STMicroelectronics (power semis). Rivals ship competing HDDs and power chips into the same AI-driven demand, but Toshiba has not visibly lost share yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Deep government-linked positions in nuclear power, defense, and rail signaling that are slow to rebid and hard for any AI product to touch.
What would change this call
Toshiba Tec's next earnings (around June 2027) show continued losses or a segment loss spread. Would show POS/retail unit losing further ground to NCR Voyix, Diebold Nixdorf.
FY2026 results show whether 10% ROS is hit on core operations excluding Kioxia gains. Would show if underlying industrial and semiconductor units are actually competitive.
Relisting timeline confirmed, delayed past FY2028, or cancelled. Would show whether the turnaround and debt restructuring are on track or stalling.
Key numbers
  • Delisted Dec 2023, ending a 74-year run as a listed company (2023-12-20)
  • 9-month operating income rose to Y214.7B from Y114.3B (2026)
  • Debt cut from Y1.6T to about Y1T ahead of FY2028 relisting target (2026-03-06)
Named risks
  • Relisting target of FY2028 is explicitly the earliest plausible case and contingent on turnaround success. Severity: high
  • FY2025 record profit driven substantially by one-time Kioxia stake gains rather than core operating improvement. Severity: medium
  • Toshiba Tec subsidiary swung to a ¥12.053 billion net loss in FY ended March 2026. Severity: medium
  • Debt restructuring converting ¥750 billion preferred shares to bank loans still in progress as of March 2026. Severity: medium
  • Company has a prior accounting scandal (2015) and Westinghouse nuclear bankruptcy (2017) history. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Toshiba still a publicly traded company in 2026?
No. Toshiba delisted from the Tokyo and Nagoya Stock Exchanges on December 20, 2023, ending a 74 year run as a listed company, after Japan Industrial Partners led a roughly $13.5 to 15.2 billion take private buyout.
Who owns Toshiba now?
Toshiba is privately held by a consortium led by Japan Industrial Partners, which secured about 78.65% of shares in a September 2023 tender offer alongside roughly 20 co investors including Orix, Rohm and Chubu Electric Power.
Will Toshiba relist on the stock exchange?
Toshiba is targeting a possible relisting 'as early as FY2028,' per a March 2026 report, but management describes this as the earliest plausible case, contingent on completing debt restructuring and hitting turnaround targets.
Is Toshiba profitable in 2026?
Toshiba's own FY2025 investor materials show operating income roughly doubled in the first nine months to ¥214.7 billion, with return on sales at 8.1%, targeting 10% ROS by FY2026, though gains include Kioxia stake proceeds.
Could AI replace Toshiba's core business?
No. Toshiba's revenue comes mainly from physical infrastructure like nuclear power, elevators, defense systems, and power semiconductors, and the company markets HDDs and SiC chips as suppliers into AI data center buildouts, not as an AI displacement target.
Is Toshiba Tec losing money?
Yes. Toshiba Tec, the listed POS and printing subsidiary, posted a net loss of ¥12.053 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2026, versus ¥13.641 billion in net income the prior year, per its May 2026 filing.
