The call

Toyota still sells more cars than anyone, but tariffs have wiped out North America profit and BYD is taking real share in China, while its EV and software plans lag the pace rivals are setting.

Toyota makes cars and trucks across the globe and finances them through its own lending business, selling more vehicles than any other company. It is hard to compete with Toyota because it has factories in over 170 countries, massive experience building reliable cars cheaply, and a lead in hybrid technology, but Chinese makers like BYD are now winning customers in China with electric cars, and US tariffs are cutting profits in North America. The key question is whether Toyota can keep its market share in China and whether tariffs stay high enough to permanently damage profits, even if the company itself stays healthy.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tesla Full Self-Driving and Chinese software-defined EV makers (BYD, Xiaomi) with AI cockpits. Toyota's infotainment and autonomy software trails rivals building AI-native cockpits, pushing it to lean harder on hybrids while software catches up. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BYD. BYD and domestic Chinese EV makers drove a 31.7% collapse in Toyota's China sales in FY2026, a real share loss, not a supply hiccup. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Global manufacturing scale, 170+ country dealer and finance network, and hybrid technology that still outsells pure EVs almost everywhere outside China.

Questions people ask
Is Toyota profitable in 2026?
Yes. Toyota reported FY2026 (ended March 31, 2026) operating income of ¥3.766 trillion (~$24.9B) and net income of ¥3.848 trillion, though both fell versus FY2025 as a ¥1.38 trillion US tariff hit cut operating profit by 21.5% year over year.
Is Toyota laying off employees?
No. Toyota Motor's headcount rose to 390,927 employees as of March 31, 2026, up 7,074 (+1.84%) year over year, continuing a multi-year growth trend even as North America profits were erased by tariffs.
Could AI replace Toyota's business?
Unlikely to replace it directly. Toyota's moat is physical manufacturing scale, a 170+ country dealer network, and captive finance. It is deploying AI internally, unveiling the Woven City AI Vision Engine on April 22, 2026, but frames AI as expanding human intuition, not replacing its workforce or distribution.
Who is Toyota's biggest competitor?
In EVs, Tesla leads the US market with 52.3% share in H1 2026 versus Toyota's 4.7%, while BYD and Geely drove a 31.7% collapse in Toyota's China sales by mid-2026. Toyota still ranked world's largest automaker overall for calendar 2025.
Who owns Toyota Motor Corporation?
Toyota Motor Corporation is publicly traded (Tokyo Stock Exchange 7203, NYSE ADR TM) with no single controlling shareholder, though the Toyoda family retains board influence via chairman Akio Toyoda. It completed a going-private buyout of affiliate Toyota Industries, selling its 24.66% stake by June 14, 2026 for a ¥1.2 trillion gain.
Is Toyota losing market share to Chinese EV makers?
Yes in China specifically. Toyota's China sales collapsed 31.7% year over year by mid-2026, driven by BYD and Geely taking share, part of a broader four-month global sales decline through May 2026 that also hit Middle East volumes (down 38.6%).
