The call

One game, one publisher, zero cash cushion: Toys for Bob's future rides entirely on Spyro shipping well and Microsoft staying interested.

Toys for Bob makes video games and is now counting almost entirely on Spyro: A Realm Beyond, a game coming in spring 2027, to stay alive. The studio does not own Spyro; Microsoft and Activision do, which means Microsoft can cancel, delay, or hand the project to another studio whenever it wants, just as it laid off thousands of game workers in 2024. The one thing that could change this picture is if the studio finishes Spyro on time, the game sells well, and Microsoft keeps investing in it, but right now the studio has no backup plan and almost no money of its own.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools could speed asset production but the real risk here is business survival, not AI replacing the studio. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft/Xbox (publisher and IP owner via Activision Blizzard). Microsoft owns Spyro, laid off half the studio in 2024, and can end or reassign the publishing deal at will. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Xbox needs someone to make the Spyro game it wants to sell, and this team built the original.
What would change this call
Spyro: A Realm Beyond gameplay reveal or delay announcement in next 6-12 months. Weak reception or delay would signal trouble for the studio's single project.
Xbox announces continuation, expansion, or termination of publishing deal with Toys for Bob. Shows whether Microsoft still backs the studio post-2024 layoffs.
Toys for Bob announces a second funded project or outside VC investment before Spyro ships. Would indicate reduced single-project and single-publisher dependency.

Questions people ask
Is Toys for Bob financially stable in 2026?
No outside funding is reported. CB Insights lists Toys for Bob's only funding event as its own Feb 2024 spinoff from Activision, with no VC round since. The studio depends entirely on one unshipped game, Spyro: A Realm Beyond, and has no disclosed capital cushion as of June 2026.
Who owns Toys for Bob now?
Toys for Bob became an independent private studio on February 29, 2024, splitting from Activision and Microsoft after Microsoft's $68.7B Activision Blizzard acquisition closed in October 2023. It still relies on Microsoft as publisher for its next game.
Did Microsoft lay off Toys for Bob staff?
Yes. In January 2024 Microsoft cut 86 to 89 Toys for Bob employees, more than half the studio, and closed its Novato, California office as part of roughly 1,900 Xbox gaming division layoffs, per Press Democrat, February 13, 2024.
What is Toys for Bob working on next?
Spyro: A Realm Beyond, announced at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 to 8, 2026, targeting a Spring 2027 release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2, built in Unreal Engine 5 with original voice actor Tom Kenny returning.
Could AI replace Toys for Bob's developers?
No frontier AI ships AAA platformers as of 2026, so replacement isn't imminent. But generative tools are eroding art, QA, and localization tasks industry-wide, pressuring small studios like Toys for Bob on margin rather than existence.
Who is the biggest threat to Toys for Bob?
Microsoft/Activision Blizzard, which owns the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot IP outright and is Toys for Bob's sole publisher. It already cut 86 to 89 staff in January 2024 and could reassign or end the publishing deal with no structural barrier stopping it.
