The call

Traveloka still owns Indonesia's booking habit and cash-based payment rails, but its valuation has stalled and AI agents are chipping at where trips start.

Traveloka lets people book flights, hotels, and activities online across Southeast Asia, with its strongest grip in Indonesia where it controls about 45% of the market. It has real advantages that are hard for outsiders to copy: partnerships with local Indonesian banks, a buy-now-pay-later service, and the ability to let customers pay cash at convenience stores, plus government travel licenses. But the business is shrinking (the company laid off workers in early 2026 and stopped hiring), its stock price has gone nowhere for six years, and two problems are squeezing it at once: AI chatbots like Google Flights and ChatGPT are answering travel questions without sending people to Traveloka's website at all, and Trip.com, a much bigger Chinese rival worth $25 billion, is aggressively moving into Southeast Asian countries where Traveloka used to operate mostly unopposed. The one thing that could shift the story is whether AI travel assistants actually start booking trips directly without using travel websites, which would hit Traveloka's profits hard, or whether Trip.com fails to gain real traction outside Indonesia despite spending heavily to try.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini Flights, ChatGPT travel agents, Booking's AI Trip Planner. AI agents now search and book flights and hotels directly, pulling users away before they ever open the Traveloka app. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Trip.com. Trip.com, valued near $25B, is pushing into Vietnam, Japan, and Australia, the same markets Traveloka is trying to grow into. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Local payment rails: PayLater credit, Indomaret cash pickup, and bank ties that global rivals struggle to copy in Indonesia.
What would change this call
Trip.com reports measurable booking share gains in Vietnam, Thailand, or Philippines. Would show Traveloka's regional moat is smaller than brand surveys suggest.
Traveloka announces a second layoff round or discloses take-rate compression. Would confirm AI-driven margin squeeze on the discovery layer is accelerating.
Traveloka files an S-1 or confirms IPO pricing below $3B. Would signal the equity growth thesis has failed despite market leadership.

Questions people ask
Is Traveloka profitable in 2026?
No audited financials are public. Third-party revenue estimates for Traveloka conflict wildly, from $225.9M in 2022 (CB Insights) to $766M-$814M annualized as of April 2025 (Growjo), so profitability cannot be confirmed either way as of mid 2026.
Did Traveloka have layoffs?
Yes. Traveloka confirmed layoffs in February 2026, described by the company as a workforce evolution around capabilities, technology and growth. A third-party tracker estimated the scope at 200-500 employees, per WebInTravel, February 4 2026.
Could AI replace Traveloka?
AI already handles much of Traveloka's front line: the company states its chatbots resolve about 75% of customer inquiries and over 90% of reschedules and refunds are self-service as of September 2025, per eplaneai.com. Local payment rails and licensing remain harder for AI agents to replicate.
Who owns Traveloka?
Traveloka is privately held with no ticker. Backers include Expedia (minority stake since a $350M round in July 2017), GIC ($420M, April 2019), and Qatar Investment Authority ($250M, July 2020), with cumulative funding of about $1.47B since 2012, per Crustdata, July 2026.
Who is Traveloka's biggest competitor?
Trip.com Group, valued above $25B, is the most material threat, actively expanding into Traveloka's newer markets of Japan, Australia and Vietnam. Agoda (Booking Holdings) and Expedia also compete regionally, though Traveloka leads Indonesian OTA brand perception at 80.6% as of April 2026, per Campaign Asia.
Is Traveloka planning an IPO?
Speculative only. Analysts cite a possible late 2025-2026 listing, but no S-1 or exchange has been confirmed as of July 2026, per askcyborg.com. A prior SPAC deal with Bridgetown Holdings was halted in September 2021.
