Truecaller
Truecaller runs a caller ID and spam-blocking app with over 500 million monthly users, mostly in India.
Truecaller still owns the world's biggest crowdsourced number database, but Apple, Google, and India's own regulator are each building around it at once.
Truecaller lets people identify incoming calls and block spam using a shared database of phone numbers built by its users. It's getting harder to defend because Apple and Google have added these same features directly into their phones, and Google also controls the ads that made up most of Truecaller's profit, which dropped sharply after Google changed how those ads work. The company still makes money from businesses that pay to get verified badges, and if that business grows fast enough and the company finds new advertising partners outside of Google, it could survive, but it faces a race against time as more people abandon the app for the free features already on their phones.
India's TRAI moves its CNAP caller-ID system from proposal to pan-India rollout. A government substitute could erode Truecaller's core product in India, ~75% of its revenue.
India and global download figures for 2026 either continue declining or recover from 2025's -16%/-5% YoY drops. Shows whether Apple/Google native features are structurally denting Truecaller's user growth.
- Q2 2026 net sales down 21% YoY to SEK 393.2M
- Ad revenue down 40% YoY to SEK 200M
- India, ~75% of revenue, downloads fell 16% YoY
- India's TRAI CNAP could substitute Truecaller's core service in its ~75%-revenue market.
- Dependence on single ad partner (reportedly Google) for over one-third of revenue.
- Falling downloads in India (-16% YoY 2025) and globally (-5% YoY) after years of growth.
- Sweden IMY GDPR investigation into data practices opened February 2025, decision pending.
- Nigeria litigation over unconsented phonebook-upload data practices.

- Is Truecaller profitable in 2026?
- Truecaller beat Q2 2026 estimates with EPS of $0.16 vs $0.10 forecast, reported July 17, 2026, but net sales fell 21% YoY to SEK 393.2M as advertising revenue dropped 40% YoY, so profitability is holding despite steep top-line erosion.
- Is Truecaller losing to Apple and Google?
- Yes, on the consumer side. Apple shipped native Live Caller ID Lookup in iOS 18.2 in January 2025, and Google, Truecaller's largest ad partner, changed its algorithm causing a 40% YoY ad-revenue drop reported July 2026, while also building competing spam protection into its Phone app.
- Could AI replace Truecaller?
- Not directly. Truecaller's core caller-ID and spam detection is itself ML-driven and community-data based, so frontier AI augments rather than replaces it. The real threat is platform owners Apple and Google embedding similar AI features natively into iOS and Android, reducing the need for the third-party app.
- Who owns Truecaller?
- Truecaller AB is a Swedish public company listed on Nasdaq Stockholm as TRUE B since its October 8, 2021 IPO. Top institutional holders as of Q1 2026 filings include SEB Funds AB (~5.5%), Malabar Investments (~5.3%), and Vanguard (~3.4%); founders Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam retain minority stakes.
- What is Truecaller's biggest competitor threat?
- India's telecom regulator TRAI is building a government-run CNAP (Calling Name Presentation) caller-ID system as a state-backed substitute, disclosed in coverage dated July 2026, threatening Truecaller's largest market, which Wikipedia estimates at roughly 75% of company revenue.
- Why did Truecaller's revenue fall in 2026?
- Truecaller's Q1 2026 net sales fell 27% YoY to SEK 361.6M, with India sales down 41% and ad revenue down 44%, reported May 8, 2026, driven by an ad-partner algorithm change, India real-money-gaming curbs, and Middle East conflict effects on advertising.
