The call

Trust Wallet leads a crowded, commodity wallet market on scale alone, while a recent hack, an unresolved ownership split from Binance, and a live DOJ probe into its former parent all sit unresolved.

Trust Wallet is an app that lets people hold and trade cryptocurrencies without a bank or company controlling their money. It has 220 million users and gets distribution through Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, which gives it a big head start. However, other wallets like MetaMask and Phantom offer nearly the same thing and can be built just as easily, so Trust Wallet's popularity is not guaranteed to last. The real problems are two: Binance (its owner) faces a major investigation from the U.S. Department of Justice over sanctions violations, which could spill over and damage Trust Wallet's reputation or operations; and AI trading assistants from companies like Google or OpenAI could eventually let people trade cryptocurrencies directly without needing a wallet app at all, making Trust Wallet irrelevant. The one thing that could save Trust Wallet is if its new AI assistant feature (TWAK) becomes so useful that other wallets can't copy it quickly enough.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI trading agents from OpenAI, Google, and crypto-native labs with direct chain execution. If AI agents execute trades directly on-chain, wallet UIs like Trust Wallet's could get skipped; its TWAK kit is a defense, not yet proven ahead of rivals. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: MetaMask, Phantom, Coinbase Wallet. All three run live, well-funded wallets in the same commodity category, and Phantom is gaining Solana share Trust Wallet just started chasing. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 220M+ user base and Binance-ecosystem distribution give it scale rivals must still build toward.
What would change this call
Whether MetaMask or Phantom ships a competing AI agent-execution kit before Trust Wallet's TWAK gains third-party adoption. Would show Trust Wallet losing its window to lead the emerging agent-execution wallet category.
Whether the Binance DOJ sanctions-evasion probe names Trust Wallet or its officers directly. Would show regulatory spillover threatening Trust Wallet's independence and user trust.
Whether Trust Wallet suffers a second security breach within 12 months of the December 2025 hack. Would show unresolved security weaknesses driving users toward rival wallets.

Questions people ask
Is Trust Wallet profitable in 2026?
Reports are inconsistent: Trust Wallet says it moved from a $10 million annual loss to nearly $10 million in revenue under former CEO Eowyn Chen, per a February 2026 report announcing her successor Felix Fan. No audited financials are public, so profitability claims remain self-reported and unverified.
Who owns Trust Wallet now?
Binance acquired Trust Wallet in July 2018, its first-ever acquisition. Binance Academy disclaimers state that as of May 15, 2025, Trust Wallet is no longer owned or controlled by the Binance Exchange Group, though it stays closely tied to Binance co-founder CZ and Binance's ecosystem via integrations like Binance Connect.
Is Trust Wallet safe to use after the 2025 hack?
On December 24, 2025, a compromised Chrome extension update drained roughly $7 to $8.5 million from about 2,596 wallets via a leaked Chrome Web Store API key. Trust Wallet pledged reimbursement through Binance's SAFU fund, but faced about 5,000 claims against roughly 2,600 verified victims by January 2026.
Could AI replace Trust Wallet?
Unlikely to fully replace it: Trust Wallet launched its own Trust Wallet Agent Kit (TWAK) on March 26, 2026, letting AI agents execute transactions across 25+ chains, positioning itself as infrastructure for agents rather than being disintermediated, though rivals could ship comparable agent kits.
Who is Trust Wallet's biggest competitor?
MetaMask, Phantom, Coinbase Wallet and OKX Web3 Wallet are Trust Wallet's closest non-custodial wallet rivals as of 2026. Trust Wallet's own CEO, Eowyn Chen, also named fintech apps PayPal and Venmo as emerging competitors in an October 2025 interview as on-chain finance converges with mainstream fintech.
Has Trust Wallet had layoffs?
No documented layoffs were found as of mid-2026. Headcount estimates vary widely by source, from Glassdoor's self-reported 51 to 200 employees to Growjo's estimate of about 518. The company did see a leadership change in February 2026 when CEO Eowyn Chen stepped down after four years.
