The call

Turnkey has real customers and real technical lock-in, but it now competes against Stripe and Coinbase in the exact same layer it pioneered.

Turnkey makes tools that let apps safely manage user cryptocurrency wallets and keys without exposing the user's secrets. The company built real technical advantages: special security containers, official compliance stamps, and lock-in features that competitors would struggle to copy. But the market shifted fast in 2025. Stripe bought Privy, Fireblocks acquired rivals and expanded, and Coinbase built competing products. These giants have more money, more customers already, and existing customer relationships. Turnkey is one of only two independent players left. The real test: whether Stripe moves its Bridge product from Turnkey to Privy. If it does, that's a clear signal the bigger player is taking Turnkey's customers.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents need wallets to hold keys and sign transactions, so agentic payment growth feeds Turnkey rather than replacing it, if it wins that layer. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe (Privy), Coinbase Developer Platform, Fireblocks. Stripe bought Privy in July 2025 and Coinbase pushes CDP wallets, both selling the same embedded wallet layer Turnkey sells, backed by huge distribution. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Keys sit inside AWS Nitro secure enclaves under SOC 2 controls, and switching means re-doing custody integration and compliance work.
What would change this call
Stripe migrates Bridge's wallet infrastructure from Turnkey to Privy. Would confirm a shipped rival is taking share from inside Turnkey's own customer base.
Turnkey publishes NRR figures above 120% after Privy's launch. Would show customer lock-in is holding despite Stripe's competing product.
Turnkey ships native x402 agentic-payment support within the next year. Would show it is keeping pace with Coinbase CDP, Circle, and Crossmint rather than being relegated to plumbing.
Key numbers
  • Total funding over $65M (May 2026)
  • Powers 50M+ embedded wallets (June 2025)
  • 51 to 100 employees (2026)
Named risks
  • Stripe could migrate Bridge from Turnkey to Privy, confirming loss of an anchor customer. Severity: high
  • Market consolidation (Stripe/Privy, Fireblocks/Dynamic, ConsenSys/Web3Auth) leaves Turnkey as one of last independents vs well-capitalized rivals. Severity: high
  • Lack of native x402 agent-payment support risks relegating Turnkey to lower-value signing plumbing. Severity: medium
  • Sao Paulo ruling against Coinbase sets precedent that could expose non-custodial wallet software providers to liability. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting third-party revenue and headcount figures suggest limited financial transparency. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Turnkey profitable in 2026?
No public revenue or profitability figures exist for Turnkey as of mid-2026. The company self-reports powering over 50 million embedded wallets and processing millions of transactions weekly (June 2025), but audited financials are not disclosed, and third-party revenue estimates conflict with headcount data.
Who owns Turnkey the crypto wallet company?
Turnkey is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2022 by Bryce Ferguson and Jack Kearney, both former Coinbase Custody team members. It launched publicly around March 21, 2023, and has raised over $65 million total across seed, Series A, Series B, and a 2026 strategic round.
Is Turnkey a safe company to join right now?
Turnkey is exposed to heavy competitive pressure: in 2025 Stripe acquired Privy, Fireblocks acquired Dynamic, and ConsenSys acquired Web3Auth, leaving Turnkey as one of only two remaining independent wallet-infrastructure players (with Dfns) against well-capitalized incumbents as of mid-2026.
Could AI replace Turnkey's core product?
No. Turnkey's core moat is TEE-based key custody via AWS Nitro Enclaves and its open-sourced QuorumOS attestable unikernel (described February 2025), plus SOC 2 Type II compliance and third-party security audits. This cryptographic and compliance layer is not AI-replaceable, though wallet UX layers risk commoditization.
Who is Turnkey's biggest competitive threat?
Stripe's acquisition of Privy in July 2025 is the clearest threat, since Stripe-owned Bridge is currently a Turnkey customer; if Stripe migrates Bridge from Turnkey to Privy, that would confirm a shipped rival is taking share from inside Turnkey's own customer base.
How much funding has Turnkey raised?
Turnkey has raised over $65 million total as of May 2026, per Sacra, including a $15M Series A (April 2024, led by Lightspeed Faction and Galaxy Ventures), a $30M Series B (June 2025, led by Bain Capital Crypto), and a $12.5M strategic round (May 2026, backed by Archetype and Circle Ventures).
