The call

Twitch still leads live streaming but keeps losing ground to YouTube Gaming and Kick while Amazon treats it as a rounding error.

Twitch lets people watch and broadcast live video games and creative content in real time, with built-in chat where viewers connect with each other and creators. It used to own this market, but YouTube Gaming (owned by Google, which is far richer) now has better tools for finding old videos, pays creators a bigger cut, and is winning viewers fast: YouTube Gaming grew to 24% of all livestream watching while Twitch dropped from 70% to 54% in just a few years. Kick, a smaller competitor paying creators even more money, is also taking share. The one thing that could change this: if Twitch finds a way to make money (it currently loses money) and uses that profit to either pay creators more than YouTube, or build community features that YouTube cannot copy quickly.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product is eating Twitch directly; the drain is human creators moving to YouTube Gaming and Kick for better splits and reach. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: YouTube Gaming (Google/Alphabet). YouTube Gaming's share hit 24% with record 2025 growth while Twitch's watch-time share fell from 70% to 54% in 18 months. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Live chat culture and creator habit keep most big streamers on Twitch, propped up by Amazon's cash and infrastructure.

Questions people ask
Is Twitch profitable in 2026?
No confirmed profitability has been disclosed. CEO Dan Clancy said in January 2024, 'I'll be blunt: We aren't profitable at this point.' Estimated 2025 revenue fell to about $1.7-1.9 billion from a prior peak, and Twitch remains under 0.5% of Amazon's total revenue as of 2026.
Who owns Twitch?
Twitch is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., acquired in August/September 2014 for approximately $970 million in cash after reportedly outbidding Google. It operates as Twitch Interactive, Inc. and does not disclose standalone financials.
Is Twitch losing market share to YouTube Gaming?
Yes. Twitch's livestreaming watch-time share fell from roughly 70% to about 54% over 18 months through mid-2026, per Streams Charts data, while YouTube Gaming grew to about 24% share with 8.8 billion hours watched in 2025.
Could AI replace Twitch streamers?
Unlikely soon. CEO Dan Clancy has argued AI-generated or virtual channels are 'not engaging enough to hold a viewer's attention' compared to live human creators as of June 2026. Twitch's core moat is synchronous human community, not content AI can easily automate.
Who is Twitch's biggest competitor?
YouTube Gaming, owned by Google/Alphabet, is the primary threat, holding about 24% of livestreaming watch-time share in mid-2026 with a 70/30 revenue split versus Twitch's 50/50. Kick, offering a 95/5 split, held about 11% share after 131% YoY growth in 2025.
Is Amazon planning to sell or shut down Twitch?
CEO Dan Clancy publicly denied divestiture speculation as of June 2026, per Fortune. However, Twitch represents under 0.5% of Amazon's revenue and has undergone three layoff rounds since 2023, suggesting it is tolerated rather than a growth priority for the parent.
