The call

Ubiregi keeps a loyal but small base in Japan's POS market, far behind Airregi and Smaregi, betting its Enterprise pivot can open new ground before its capital gap widens.

Ubiregi sells point-of-sale and restaurant management software to mid-market restaurants in Japan. It is hard to replace because restaurants get locked into its payment systems and workflows, and it keeps 99.4% of its customers year to year, but it is much smaller than Airregi (a free Recruit product used by 900,000 restaurants) and faces a new, well-funded competitor called Dinii that is attacking the same large restaurant chains where Ubiregi's biggest customers sit. The one thing that could change everything is whether Ubiregi's new Enterprise division, launched in July 2024, can win real contracts with major chains at high prices without relying on its partner Toshiba Tec, which also competes against it directly.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product directly targets Ubiregi yet, though rivals could add AI analytics on top of transaction data. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Recruit Holdings (Airregi). Airregi's free-to-start POS, bundled through Recruit's distribution, already runs about 900k accounts versus Ubiregi's roughly 40k. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep payment and terminal integrations plus 99.4% paid-account retention keep existing restaurant and retail clients from switching easily.
What would change this call
Ubiregi announces a new funding round or Series C within the next year. Would show capital gap versus Dinii is closing rather than widening.
Ubiregi Enterprise names a large-chain client beyond Diamond Dining or university co-ops. Would show the Enterprise pivot is winning real business independent of Toshiba Tec.
Airregi or Smaregi launches an enterprise or AI-analytics tier before Ubiregi Enterprise scales. Would show incumbents closing off Ubiregi's one escape route from the SMB market.

Questions people ask
Is Ubiregi profitable in 2026?
No profit or revenue figures have been disclosed. Ubiregi is privately held with cumulative equity funding of just $3.03M and no new funding round since June 2020, per CB Insights, though it reports 99.4% paid-account retention as of May 2026 (vendor-claimed).
Who is Ubiregi's biggest competitor?
Recruit's free-to-start Airregi is the dominant threat, claiming roughly 900,000 registered accounts as of September 2024 (vendor-claimed), versus Ubiregi's own reported 40,248 accounts as of May 2026, a gap of over 20x in scale.
Could AI replace Ubiregi's POS system?
Basic checkout and reporting functions are commoditizable, but Ubiregi's payment-terminal integrations (Rakuten Pay Terminal, September 2025; SB C&S PayCAS Mobile, June 2025) create switching costs. As of August 2025, no shipped customer-facing AI feature has been found in its product roadmap.
How many customers does Ubiregi have?
Ubiregi reports 40,248 cumulative accounts with 99.4% monthly paid-account retention as of May 2026 (vendor-claimed). A third-party comparison from BOXIL in May 2025 put active accounts closer to 24,000, well below Smaregi's 115,000 and Airregi's 817,000.
Has Ubiregi raised any funding recently?
No new round has been reported since June 2020, when CB Insights recorded a 'Corporate Minority II' round bringing cumulative funding to $3.03M. A separate Japanese source cites ¥1.68 billion (~$11-12M) cumulative as of August 2022, but no fresh capital has surfaced since.
What is Ubiregi Enterprise and why does it matter?
Launched in July 2024, Ubiregi Enterprise targets large restaurant and retail chains with core-system integration and dedicated support. It is described as Ubiregi's main structural escape from its subscale SMB position, but it competes against Toshiba Tec, which is also Ubiregi's own sales partner since 2021.
