The call

UBTECH has real customers and fast growth but ships fewer robots than two domestic rivals and still loses money doing it.

UBTECH Robotics builds humanoid robots for factories and big manufacturers like BYD, Foxconn, and Airbus, and its robot sales grew 2,200% year over year. However, two competitors are doing better: Unitree Robotics is already profitable and about to go public, while AgiBot is selling five times as many robots. UBTECH loses money on each sale (only making 38 cents profit per dollar of revenue) and has no special advantage that stops rivals from copying what it does. The question that matters most is whether it can keep its big customers or if Unitree and AgiBot steal them away in the next year, which would prove UBTECH has no real protection.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models don't sell robots yet; the fight here is over hardware, actuators, and factory deals, not chatbots. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Unitree Robotics and AgiBot. Unitree is profitable and heading for a STAR Market IPO; AgiBot ships about 5x more units than UBTECH, both racing for the same factory customers. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Named deals with BYD, Foxconn, Airbus, and others give UBTECH real revenue and integration work rivals still have to win.
What would change this call
Unitree completes its STAR Market IPO around July 2026. Would give a profitable rival more capital to compete for the same marquee accounts.
BYD, Foxconn, or Airbus places a large new order with Unitree or AgiBot instead of UBTECH. Would show UBTECH losing a named enterprise customer to a direct rival.
UBTECH's September 2026 U1 consumer deliveries versus its 13,000 pre-orders. Would show whether consumer demand converts to real sales or pre-orders get cancelled.

Questions people ask
Is UBTECH Robotics profitable in 2026?
No. UBTECH's FY2025 results (reported March 31, 2026) show a net loss of RMB 789.8 million, narrowed from prior-year losses of roughly RMB 1.1 to 1.27 billion, even as revenue grew 53.3% to RMB 2,001.0 million.
Who is UBTECH Robotics' biggest competitor?
Domestic rivals AgiBot and Unitree. Omdia's 2025 shipment data shows AgiBot shipped about 5,168 humanoid units and Unitree about 4,200, versus UBTECH's roughly 1,000, ranking UBTECH third globally as of December 31, 2025.
Could AI replace UBTECH Robotics?
UBTECH itself is an embodied-AI company selling humanoid robots, so it's a supplier rather than a target of generative-AI disruption. Its real risk is cheaper domestic rivals like Unitree, which is already profitable (RMB 591M net profit) as of mid-2026.
Who owns UBTECH Robotics?
UBTECH is publicly traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (9880.HK) with no single controlling shareholder. Founder Zhou Jian, who started the company in March 2012, remains Chairman and CEO as of 2025; early backers included Tencent and ICBC.
Has UBTECH Robotics had layoffs in 2026?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount estimates instead show growth, from about 2,025 employees in 2024 to roughly 2,231 by December 2025 per Revelio Labs, and up to about 2,550 by mid-2026 per FT data.
What deals has UBTECH Robotics signed with major manufacturers?
UBTECH announced a January 2026 deal with Airbus to trial battery-swapping humanoid robots in aircraft assembly, and counts BYD, Foxconn, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen, Texas Instruments, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi among named industrial customers as of 2026.
