The call

Unanet's compliance certification keeps both big ERP vendors and generic AI models out, but federal spending swings and an aging PE ownership stretch remain open questions.

Unanet sells accounting and project management software designed specifically for companies that work on federal government contracts. It is hard to replace because it meets strict U.S. government compliance rules (DCAA, FedRAMP) that big competitors like Microsoft, Oracle, and NetSuite are not set up to handle, and switching costs are high once a company adopts it. The company holds the #2 or #3 position in its niche, not clearly the leader, and faces a major risk: about half its revenue comes from federal spending, which the CEO has said is shrinking right now. If the federal government cuts its contracting budget or experiences a spending crisis over the next few quarters, Unanet's growth could flatten significantly.

Why
01
AI pressure: Deltek's agentic AI Costpoint upgrade. Deltek is adding AI to its own GovCon ERP, which could pull mid-market accounts back if it ships well. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, NetSuite, Oracle. These horizontal ERP giants lack DCAA/FAR/DFARS and FedRAMP-grade compliance stacks needed to run federal contractor accounting. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. DCAA/FAR/DFARS compliance certification plus new FedRAMP Moderate Equivalency, which locks in switching costs for 4,200+ customers.
What would change this call
Deltek ships a modernized cloud plus agentic AI Costpoint within 12 months. Would show Deltek closing the product gap and threatening Unanet's mid-market gains.
Federal government shutdown or multi-quarter GovCon budget contraction in 2026. Would show Unanet's ~50% federal-exposed revenue base under real strain.
JMI or Onex executes a sale, dividend recap, or IPO of Unanet. Would show whether the long PE hold ends in a clean exit or a value-extracting event.
Key numbers
  • 4,200+ customers as of Q1 2026 (2026-04-14)
  • FedRAMP Moderate Equivalency achieved (2026-01)
  • Vendor-claimed double-digit revenue growth in 2025 (2026-02-05)
Named risks

  • Revenue and growth figures are vendor self-reported with no independent audit verification. Severity: medium
  • Deltek could ship modernized cloud/agentic AI Costpoint and reclaim mid-market accounts. Severity: medium
  • PE ownership under JMI since 2019 is past typical hold period, raising exit/recap uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • Headcount reported as flat to declining by third-party trackers despite claimed revenue growth. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Unanet profitable in 2026?
Unanet discloses no audited financials as a private company. It claims 'double-digit revenue growth' for 2025 in its own February 5, 2026 press release, but this is a vendor statement, not an independently verified profitability figure.
Could AI replace Unanet's ERP platform?
Unlikely soon. Unanet achieved FedRAMP Moderate Equivalency for its GovCon ERP in January 2026 and holds decades of DCAA/FAR compliance logic a generic LLM can't replicate. Unanet is embedding AI (Champ, Wyatt) into its own product rather than being disrupted by it.
Who owns Unanet?
JMI Equity has been Unanet's primary institutional owner since a growth investment in June 2019. Canadian firm Onex Corporation joined as a strategic co-investor in December 2022, adding three board members.
Who is Unanet's biggest competitor?
Deltek (Costpoint for GovCon, Vantagepoint for AEC) is Unanet's primary incumbent rival, cited across third-party comparison platforms as the deepest-featured option for large defense primes, while Unanet contests mid-market share.
Has Unanet been acquired or gone public?
No. Unanet remains privately held. JMI Equity invested in June 2019 and Onex Corporation co-invested in December 2022; no sale, IPO, or ownership change has been reported through 2026.
What AI features has Unanet launched?
Unanet invested in agentic AI copilot Wyatt in October 2025, launched Champ AI inside ProposalAI in November 2025, and released Champ for ERP for AE firms in April 2026, per its own company announcements.
