The call

UOB's license and deposit base keep it standing; the open question is whether its wealth-income push can catch DBS and OCBC before the equity story hardens into 'lagging compounder.'

United Overseas Bank is one of three major banks in Singapore, holding customer savings and offering loans and wealth services across Asia. It cannot be replaced because it holds a government banking license from Singapore's central bank, insures customer deposits, and has built systems to prevent money laundering that took years to create. Other banks like DBS and OCBC compete on the same playing field and follow the same rules, so UOB is not threatened by a new rival or AI taking over its core job. The real question is whether UOB can grow profits faster: its wealth management business (helping rich customers invest money) fell short last year, and if that division cannot pick up speed over the next few quarters, investors will keep favoring faster-growing competitors.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trims UOB's back-office costs and cost-to-income ratio rather than pulling customers away; no AI product competes for its deposit base. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: DBS Group Holdings and OCBC. DBS and OCBC run live wealth platforms in the same Singapore pool; UOB's net fee income fell 8% YoY in Q1 2026 while it chases their pace. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. MAS banking license, deposit insurance backing, AML/KYC infrastructure, and S$426.7B in customer deposits that no new entrant can replicate quickly.

Questions people ask
Is United Overseas Bank profitable in 2026?
Yes. UOB posted Q1 FY2026 net profit of about S$1.44 billion, up 2% quarter on quarter though down roughly 4% year on year, as of 31 March 2026. FY2025 net profit was S$4.695 billion, down 23% from S$6.059 billion in FY2024 due to margin normalization.
Could AI replace United Overseas Bank?
No. UOB holds a Monetary Authority of Singapore banking license, deposit insurance backing, and AML/KYC infrastructure that AI cannot replicate. AI is instead used internally, including a 2025 Accenture AI Refinery deployment, to cut costs; total assets stood at S$572.1 billion as of 31 December 2025.
Is United Overseas Bank laying off staff due to AI?
UOB's headcount fell to about 31,224 at end-2025, down 849 from 32,071 at end-2024, a roughly 2.6% drop. Singapore's three local banks (DBS, OCBC, UOB) collectively cut about 2,806 jobs in 2025, a trend partly attributed to AI and automation as of April 2026.
Who is United Overseas Bank's biggest competitor?
UOB's main rivals are Singapore's other two domestic banks, DBS Group and OCBC. As of May 2026, DBS's market cap approached S$200 billion and OCBC's surpassed S$100 billion in April 2026, while analysts described UOB as lagging both on momentum and needing proof of acceleration.
Who owns United Overseas Bank?
UOB is publicly listed on the Singapore Exchange under ticker U11, with no single controlling parent; institutional investors are the largest shareholder bloc alongside the founding Wee family's strategic holdings. Market capitalization was approximately S$71.1 billion as of 22 July 2026.
Why did United Overseas Bank's profit fall in 2025?
UOB's FY2025 net profit dropped 23% to S$4.695 billion from S$6.059 billion in FY2024, driven by net interest margin normalization rather than structural business damage. Net interest income fell 3% year over year to S$9.355 billion despite total assets growing to S$572.1 billion.
