The call

Upbit keeps its license-protected grip on Korean crypto trading while revenue shrinks, rivals recapture share, and regulators decide the Naver deal's fate.

Upbit lets South Koreans buy and sell cryptocurrencies. It is hard to replace because the Korean government only lets a few companies do this, and Upbit has the banking connections others lack; Binance and Coinbase cannot legally operate there. The problem is that profits are falling year over year, its market share dropped sharply then bounced back, and it now faces two serious threats: an investigation into a major 2025 security hack and a government review of its planned merger with Naver. If either investigation bans the merger or imposes heavy penalties, the company's growth plans could stall.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up inside Upbit as fraud detection and KYC tooling, not as a rival trading venue eating its volume. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Mirae Asset-backed Korbit and Kiwoom-backed Bithumb, plus banks like KB and Woori eyeing exchange licenses. Traditional finance now buys into Korean exchanges directly, and Bithumb is clawing back share from Upbit's 51-69% range. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Its VASP license and exclusive real-name KRW bank linkage keep Binance and Coinbase legally locked out of direct Korean trading.
What would change this call
Bithumb completes Kiwoom Securities investment and posts sustained share gains vs Upbit. Would show a domestic rival, not a foreign giant, is eroding Upbit's dominance.
KFTC rules on the Naver-Dunamu merger by Dec 31, 2026. Blocking or restructuring would show regulatory risk overriding Upbit's structural moat.
FSS issues formal sanctions from its inspection over the Nov 2025 hack. Severe penalties would show trust/regulatory standing weakening, not just competitor gains.

Questions people ask
Is Upbit (Dunamu) profitable in 2026?
Yes but shrinking: Dunamu's FY2025 net profit was ₩708.9 billion, down 27.9% year over year, on revenue of ₩1.5578 trillion (down 10% YoY), reported March 30, 2026. Trading commissions made up 98.3% of revenue as crypto trading volumes cooled.
Who owns Upbit?
Upbit is operated by Dunamu Inc., founded by Song Chi-hyung, who holds 25.51%. Naver Financial agreed on November 27, 2025 to acquire 100% of Dunamu via share swap, valuing it at ₩15.13 trillion (~$10.3B deal), pending KFTC antitrust review through December 31, 2026.
Could AI replace Upbit's business?
Unlikely. Upbit's moat is its VASP license and real-name KRW bank rails that foreign exchanges can't replicate; AI is used internally for fraud detection and KYC, not as a substitute for licensed custody and fiat rails, per company/deal disclosures through mid-2026.
Was Upbit hacked?
Yes. On November 27, 2025, Upbit suffered a ~54-minute hot-wallet hack of Solana-network assets worth about ₩44.5 billion (~$30-32M). Dunamu covered ₩38.6 billion from reserves; South Korea's FSS opened a formal sanctions process, sending an inspection letter July 18-19, 2026.
Who is Upbit's biggest competitor in Korea?
Bithumb is Upbit's main domestic rival; an aggressive listing blitz cut Upbit's market share to roughly 51% in April 2026 before it rebounded to 68.7% by May 6, 2026 and settled near 63% by mid-July 2026.
Is Upbit being acquired?
Naver Financial agreed on November 27, 2025 to acquire 100% of Dunamu (Upbit's operator) in a share-swap deal valuing Dunamu at ₩15.13 trillion (~$10.3B total). The deal awaits Korea Fair Trade Commission antitrust clearance, with a deadline extended to December 31, 2026.
