The call

Valero's physical footprint keeps it safe from new competitors, but its stock rides record margins that history says come back down.

Valero turns crude oil into gasoline and diesel at 14 refineries across the US, making money on the difference between what it pays for crude and what customers pay for fuel. It is hard to replace because the US has not built a new refinery in 50 years, permits are locked in, and crude pipelines run to these specific plants, but Valero's profits swing wildly as fuel prices and demand change, and right now profits are unusually high, meaning they may fall sharply. The biggest question is whether fuel demand drops fast enough to squeeze Valero's profits before new rules on renewable fuel credits or environmental rules force it to spend heavily to keep running.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't refine oil or move fuel; rising data center power and diesel demand is a mild tailwind, not a threat. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No US refiner or major has built new capacity in 50 years; rivals like Marathon and Phillips 66 face the same wall. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Permits and pipeline access nobody can replicate; the last new US refinery opened in the 1970s.
What would change this call
Q3/Q4 2026 refining crack-spread margin per barrel compared to $14.90 record. Shows whether record margins are mean-reverting, testing earnings durability.
EPA ruling on RFS/RIN and 45V hydrogen tax credit in 2026. Would show whether policy risk compresses Diamond Green Diesel renewable-diesel margins.
Outcome of Port Arthur explosion litigation and WARN Act investigation over Benicia layoffs. Would show scale of legal/operational liability beyond one-time incident.
