The call

Valmont's steel and irrigation hardware sit mostly outside AI's reach, with grid-modernization demand offsetting a weak farm cycle for now.

Valmont Industries manufactures large structures for electric utility companies and irrigation systems for farmers. It is hard to replace in the utility business because of its 84 factories, engineering certifications needed for grid safety, and the regulatory approvals required to build these systems. However, the farm side of the business is weak right now because of struggling farm economics. The company is already giving up on farm data software by closing its Prospera product in 2025, so software platforms are not a real threat to its core hardware business. The one thing that could change everything is if the farm downturn lasts longer than a normal business cycle, which would signal a deeper problem rather than a temporary weakness.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ag-data analytics platforms (e.g. Climate FieldView, Taranis). Valmont shut down its own Prospera ag-analytics unit in 2025, ceding the software layer while its steel and pivot hardware stay untouched by AI. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Lindsay Corporation and equipment makers Deere/CNH in irrigation. Lindsay and farm-equipment giants could contest irrigation share someday, but no visible customer losses show up yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 84 manufacturing plants, grid-structure engineering certifications, and recurring parts revenue from an installed irrigation base.
What would change this call
Lindsay Corporation (Zimmatic) reports irrigation revenue growth vs. Valmont Ag in coming quarters. Would show whether Ag weakness is industry-wide cyclicality or Valmont losing irrigation share.
Section 301 tariff court ruling outcome over the next 6-12 months. Would show whether steel-input costs materially compress Valmont's margins.
Q3 2026 earnings (late October 2026) utility pipeline conversion from the $6.7B figure. Would show whether utility project pipeline is converting to bookings or slipping/canceling.

Questions people ask
Is Valmont Industries profitable in 2026?
Yes. Valmont raised FY2026 guidance on July 22, 2026 to net sales of $4.3 to $4.45 billion and diluted EPS of $22.25 to $23.50, after Q2 2026 adjusted EPS hit $6.14 versus $4.88 a year earlier.
Who is Valmont Industries' biggest competitor?
Lindsay Corporation (Zimmatic brand) is Valmont's closest direct rival, competing head-to-head in center-pivot and lateral-move irrigation and road-safety products; the two have historically litigated patent disputes over irrigation remote-control tech.
Could AI replace Valmont Industries?
Unlikely for its core business. Steel manufacturing of utility poles and irrigation hardware is largely untouched by AI. Valmont's own AI bet, the $300M 2021 Prospera Technologies acquisition, was wound down as a standalone unit during 2025.
Who owns Valmont Industries?
Valmont is a public company on the NYSE (VMI) with no controlling parent. Vanguard reported a 5.09% stake (995,331 shares) in an April 2026 13G filing, per SEC filing records dated 2026-06-16.
What is Valmont's utility infrastructure growth story?
At its June 16, 2026 Investor Day, Valmont cited a $6.7 billion utility project pipeline and set a 2029 target to grow Utility segment revenue from $1.5B to $2.5B, part of broader targets of $5.4B total net sales and $35 EPS.
Is Valmont's Agriculture business struggling?
Yes, Q2 2026 Agriculture sales fell 15.8% year over year (reported 2026-07-21) due to weak North American farm economics and Middle East project delays, though recurring aftermarket parts revenue still grew about 6%.
