The call

VAST sits inside the AI buildout's plumbing with contracts incumbents haven't matched, but three customers over $100M each means any capex pullback hits hard.

VAST Data makes specialized storage computers designed to feed data to AI training systems and research labs. It is hard to replace right now because it has locked in three massive customers (CoreWeave, xAI, and others) with long contracts, and the big traditional storage companies like Dell and NetApp have not yet shipped competing systems that work as well for this specific job. The one thing that could change everything is if AI spending stops growing or if those three huge customers lose their own funding, since VAST depends on them for most of its revenue.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nvidia/hyperscaler native RAG and agent tooling. Nvidia's own data/agent layers could squeeze VAST's InsightEngine and AgentEngine software, not its core storage substrate. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Dell, HPE, NetApp, Pure Storage. All four are retrofitting shared-everything architectures to chase neocloud deals, but none has won a displacement yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Multi-year contracts and validated Nvidia/Cisco reference designs already installed inside CoreWeave, xAI, and other GPU clusters.
What would change this call
NetApp AFX, HPE Alletra MP X10000, or Pure FlashBlade//S publicly wins a named neocloud/GPU-cloud deployment. Would show incumbents finally displacing VAST in its core AI-storage segment.
CoreWeave discloses renegotiation, delay, or reduction of its $1.17B VAST agreement. Would signal customer concentration risk materializing and weaker lock-in than claimed.
VAST files for IPO or announces M&A using Series F proceeds within the next 12 months. Would confirm the company's growth and capital position are strong enough to go public or consolidate.
Key numbers
  • $1.17B CoreWeave storage contract (Nov 2025)
  • $500M+ committed annual recurring revenue (FY2025)
  • $30B valuation after $1B Series F (Apr 2026)
Named risks
  • Revenue concentration in three customers over $100M each, including CoreWeave's $1.17B deal. Severity: high
  • AI infrastructure capex cyclicality could slow neocloud bookings within one to two quarters. Severity: high
  • Storage incumbents (NetApp, Dell, HPE) retrofitting architecture toward parity over time. Severity: medium
  • Company financial claims (FCF, profitability) not independently audited as a private firm. Severity: medium
  • Large secondary component of Series F signals early investor exit rather than fresh growth capital. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is VAST Data profitable in 2026?
VAST Data claims free cash flow exceeding $100M per quarter and more than five consecutive years of positive operating cash flow, according to company statements as of February 2026. It also reports committed annual recurring revenue over $500M for the prior fiscal year, disclosed with its April 2026 Series F announcement.
Could AI replace VAST Data's storage business?
Unlikely for its core storage substrate, which benefits directly from AI infrastructure buildout, but VAST's upper layers like InsightEngine and AgentEngine face commoditization risk if Nvidia or hyperscalers ship native RAG and agent tooling, a risk flagged in 2026 analysis but not yet materialized.
Who owns VAST Data and is it public?
VAST Data is privately held and venture backed, with no parent company. Its April 2026 Series F, worth about $1B at a $30B valuation, was led by Drive Capital and Access Industries, with Fidelity, NEA and Nvidia participating, per Data Center Dynamics reporting dated July 13, 2026.
Who is VAST Data's biggest competitor?
WEKA is the most direct high-performance rival, valued around $1.6B as of a 2024 funding round per TechCrunch. Incumbents NetApp, Dell, HPE and Pure Storage are also retrofitting architectures toward parity, with NetApp reporting $1.71B quarterly revenue and about 200 AI infrastructure deals as of February 18, 2026.
Will VAST Data go public soon?
VAST's CEO has said the company is targeting IPO-readiness by end of 2026 or early 2027, per Axios reporting April 22, 2026, and hired former Shopify CFO Amy Shapero roughly 18 months prior as a signal of IPO preparation, though no filing date has been committed.
What is VAST Data's valuation as of 2026?
VAST Data was valued at $30B following a roughly $1B Series F round in April 2026, led by Drive Capital and Access Industries, making it the most valuable Israeli-founded private tech company, per Calcalist reporting dated April 23, 2026.
