The call

The state won't let Vattenfall fail, but its offshore wind division is being quietly retreated from while grid distribution and nuclear carry the weight.

Vattenfall is a huge electricity company owned by Sweden's government that sells power to 13 million customers and runs power plants, electrical grids, and wind farms. It is very hard to replace because the government owns it, the grid is a protected monopoly, and it has physical power plants that took decades to build. The real question is not whether Vattenfall disappears but which parts of it shrink or move: offshore wind farms are losing money in Sweden (the CEO said so in 2026 and cancelled a planned project), while the boring local power grid business and nuclear reactors stay profitable and stable. Watch the next earnings report in October to see if money troubles spread from wind farms to other divisions or if nuclear expansion plans fall behind schedule.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a customer here, not a hunter: Vattenfall is chasing data-centre power deals rather than being disrupted by AI tools. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Orsted, RWE, Equinor, Iberdrola in offshore wind. Rivals keep building offshore wind at scale while Vattenfall's own CEO calls Swedish offshore wind unprofitable and cancels Vidar. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 100% Swedish state ownership plus regulated grid monopoly and hydro/nuclear assets that don't depend on wind economics.
What would change this call
Vattenfall's Q3 2026 earnings release (~October 2026) shows operating-profit trend. Whether the H1 2026 margin decline is spreading beyond offshore wind into distribution or generation.
Swedish or EU state-aid ruling on the Rolls-Royce SMR nuclear financing. Whether Vattenfall's SMR nuclear strategy remains funded or stalls.
Further cancellations or sales of offshore wind projects beyond Vidar and Muir Mhòr. Whether offshore wind retreat is spreading from Sweden into Germany or Dutch pipelines.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue SEK 234.9bn, net income SEK 19.7bn (2025-12-31)
  • H1 2026 operating profit down ~20% year on year (2026-06-30)
  • Distribution segment operating profit up 70% in H1 2026 (2026-06-30)
Named risks
  • Swedish offshore wind economics unprofitable, leading to project cancellations like Vidar (2026-07-24). Severity: high
  • H1 2026 operating profit down ~20% y/y, uncertain whether decline spreads to distribution and generation. Severity: medium
  • Rolls-Royce SMR project at Ringhals/Varo pending Swedish state-aid decision, applied December 2025. Severity: medium
  • Execution and cost-overrun risk on large offshore mega-projects like Nordlicht I and II under construction. Severity: medium
  • District heating operations under ownership review across all markets, signaling possible further divestment. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Vattenfall profitable in 2026?
Vattenfall posted FY2025 net income of SEK 19.7bn on SEK 234.9bn revenue, but H1 2026 operating profit fell about 20% year over year and CEO Anna Borg called Swedish offshore wind 'not profitable' on 2026-07-19, showing uneven profitability by division.
Who owns Vattenfall?
Vattenfall AB is 100% owned by the Swedish state, confirmed in a company press release dated 2026-02-05. It is not publicly listed on equity markets, though it issues public debt, and its financial targets are set by the state as sole shareholder.
Is Vattenfall's offshore wind business struggling?
Yes. In July 2026 Vattenfall's CEO said offshore wind is 'not profitable' in Sweden, the company scrapped its approved 2GW Vidar project on 2026-07-24 citing low power prices and no offshore grid, and it sold its Muir Mhor Scotland stake in April 2026.
Could AI replace Vattenfall's business?
No. Vattenfall's core revenue comes from physical, regulated assets, nuclear plants, hydro dams, grids, and offshore wind farms, that AI cannot substitute. AI is instead becoming a demand driver, seen in Vattenfall's 230MW Nscale data-centre power deal signed 2026-05-26.
Who is Vattenfall's biggest competitor?
In offshore wind, Vattenfall competes with Orsted, RWE, Equinor and Iberdrola for European project auctions, per a Wood Mackenzie benchmarking analysis published 2024-11-21. In its home grid and retail markets it has no direct rival since distribution is a regulated monopoly.
What is Vattenfall doing in nuclear power?
Vattenfall's Videberg Kraft venture selected Rolls-Royce as SMR supplier for three small modular reactors at Ringhals/Varo Peninsula on 2026-06-15, marking Sweden's first new nuclear build in over 40 years, with the Swedish state set to become majority owner of the venture.
