The call

Vegrow moves real produce at real scale, but it competes against a bigger-funded twin in a business where losses are still wider than the gap it needs to close.

Vegrow buys fruits and vegetables from farmers and sells them to restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores across India. The company made about $66 million in revenue last year but lost $17 million, and it is getting harder to stand out because rivals like Ninjacart are three times larger and backed by Walmart, while Google and major supermarket chains are now using similar AI technology to grade fruit quality, which was once Vegrow's advantage. The one thing that could matter most is whether Vegrow can finally make real money on each sale (it currently makes very little), or whether Ninjacart's new funding round in July 2026 allows that competitor to crush smaller players through pure scale.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Cloud/Gemini computer-vision produce grading (used by Albertsons). AI grading is becoming a published, copyable technique, so Vegrow's FruitScan tool stops being a special feature. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Ninjacart (Walmart/Flipkart-backed, ~$700M valuation). Ninjacart runs the same farmer-to-buyer model at roughly 3x Vegrow's volume and is raising a Series E. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Direct farmer relationships and export lanes into West Asia, South Africa, and Turkey that took years to build.
What would change this call
Ninjacart closes its Series E funding round (targeted July 2026). Would show the larger rival gaining more capital to expand farmer and retailer share further ahead of Vegrow.
Vegrow's FY26 filings show net loss narrowing toward breakeven versus FY24's ₹140 Cr loss. Would show whether Vegrow can compete on unit economics rather than just revenue growth.
Albertsons/Google Cloud AI produce-grading tool reaches commercial deployment (from May 2026 pilot). Would show Vegrow's FruitScan grading tech losing any differentiation versus larger grocery incumbents.
Key numbers
  • FY25 revenue ~Rs 550 Cr, up 20-36% YoY (2025)
  • FY24 net loss Rs 140 Cr, -34.6% margin (2024)
  • Ninjacart: 150k+ farmers, ~$700M valuation (2026)
Named risks
  • FY24 net loss of ₹140.1 Cr contradicts Dec 2023 investor PR claiming operating profitability. Severity: high
  • Larger, better-funded Ninjacart raising Series E (July 2026) while Vegrow shows stalled growth (mid-2025). Severity: high
  • AI produce-grading technique commoditizing via academic research and incumbent adoption (Albertsons, May 2026). Severity: medium
  • Headcount and growth trajectory ambiguous, with 'no recent growth signals' reported mid-2025. Severity: medium
  • Reported $350M valuation (Jan 2025) unconfirmed by primary press, creating funding uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Vegrow profitable in 2026?
No. Vegrow's FY24 net loss was ₹140.1 Cr with a net margin of about -34.6%, despite the company telling press in December 2023 it had achieved 'healthy operating profits' at its Series C close, a direct contradiction with later filings.
Who is Vegrow's biggest competitor?
Ninjacart, the Walmart and Flipkart backed B2B produce marketplace valued at $700M as of December 2021, is Vegrow's largest rival, moving 1,600+ tonnes of produce daily versus Vegrow's roughly 200 tonnes/day reported in 2022.
Could AI replace Vegrow's FruitScan grading tool?
Vegrow's own FruitScan app (live on Google Play by October 2025) uses computer vision to grade produce, but Albertsons launched a similar Gemini-based grading tool for strawberries and grapes in May 2026, showing the underlying tech is becoming commoditized.
Who owns Vegrow?
Vegrow is privately held and venture-backed, with no parent company. GIC, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, led its $46M Series C round on December 13, 2023, alongside Prosus, Matrix Partners, Elevation Capital and Lightspeed.
How much funding has Vegrow raised?
Vegrow has raised roughly $86.5M across four primary rounds since its July 2020 seed round, most recently a $46M Series C led by GIC in December 2023, plus a reported but unconfirmed Series C extension around January 2025.
What is Vegrow's revenue?
Vegrow's FY25 revenue was reported between ₹543.7 Cr and ₹554.9 Cr, up an estimated 20-36% year over year from FY24 revenue of ₹405.1-454.5 Cr, according to Inc42's financial data platform.
