The call

Twelve years and over a billion dollars in SPAC funding ended in liquidation before Vicarious Surgical treated a single patient.

Vicarious Surgical was trying to build robot surgery systems using artificial intelligence, but the company ran out of money before it could finish testing, get government approval, or sell anything to hospitals. It is not being replaced by AI or beaten by competitor Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci robots; instead, Vicarious simply could not afford the long and expensive process of building and testing medical hardware. What could matter going forward is whether another company buys Vicarious's technology and data from the liquidation sale, because a new owner with fresh funding would get a clean three to five year chance to try what Vicarious could not finish.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI software did not sink this company; it ran out of cash before finishing a single clinical trial. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Intuitive Surgical. Da Vinci systems are installed in over 9,000 hospitals and generating billions in quarterly revenue while Vicarious never shipped a unit. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None. The company dissolved in July 2026 with no product, no FDA clearance, and no revenue to protect.
What would change this call
Whether a medtech OEM acquires Vicarious's IP or hardware from the asset auction by 2027. Would show the single-port design had residual commercial value despite the parent's collapse.
SEC Form 15 deregistration finalizing around mid-October 2026. Confirms Vicarious Surgical's formal exit from public markets is complete.

Questions people ask
Is Vicarious Surgical still operating in 2026?
No. On July 21, 2026, shareholders voted 13,348,600 to 100,879 to dissolve Vicarious Surgical and assign all assets to Vicarious Liquidation, LLC. All remaining employees, including the CEO, president, CTO, and CMO, were terminated the same day.
Did Vicarious Surgical ever generate revenue?
No. Vicarious Surgical remained pre-revenue for its entire twelve-year existence, including through its final Q1 2026 filing which explicitly stated revenue remained none, while accumulating a $246.1 million deficit as of the FY2025 10-K dated December 31, 2025.
Why did Vicarious Surgical fail?
Vicarious Surgical dissolved on July 21, 2026 after burning through its $1.1B SPAC cash without shipping a product, completing a clinical trial, or securing FDA clearance. It canceled planned first-in-human trials in August 2025 and never achieved design freeze before running out of capital.
Who is Vicarious Surgical's biggest competitor?
Intuitive Surgical, maker of the da Vinci system, dominates the market with 9,000 to 11,395 installed systems and $2.77 billion in Q1 2026 revenue alone, according to a June 2026 industry roundup, dwarfing Vicarious Surgical which never shipped a commercial unit.
Could AI have replaced or saved Vicarious Surgical?
AI is largely irrelevant here. Vicarious Surgical's collapse in July 2026 stemmed from hardware, regulatory, and capital execution failures, not AI substitution; its core product was miniaturized robotic hardware, and its January 2026 software partnership was an operational streamlining move, not an AI feature launch.
Who owns Vicarious Surgical now?
As of July 21, 2026, Vicarious Surgical's assets were assigned to a liquidation vehicle called Vicarious Liquidation, LLC following shareholder approval of dissolution. The board warned shareholders were unlikely to receive any distribution, and a Form 15 SEC deregistration was filed the same day.
