The call

A profitable, bootstrapped database maker growing fast on cost savings, sitting one dashboard-default change away from a fight with the company that controls its front end.

VictoriaMetrics is a company that stores and organizes the data that monitors whether computer systems are working properly. It costs less money to run than similar tools, which is why big companies like Spotify and Roblox use it. However, Grafana Labs, a much larger company that makes the dashboards people look at to see that data, also built its own competing storage tool called Mimir and nothing stops it from making Mimir just as cheap and reliable as VictoriaMetrics. The big question is whether Grafana will push harder to make its own tool so good that customers stop choosing VictoriaMetrics.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI observability tools mostly need what VictoriaMetrics stores; no AI agent yet replaces the storage layer itself. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Grafana Labs (Mimir). Grafana owns the dashboard millions of users see and sells Mimir as the backend behind it, squeezing VictoriaMetrics from its own front door. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A real, benchmarked cost advantage (customers report 5x to 10x lower storage bills) that keeps switching costs low for adopting VictoriaMetrics but high for leaving it once installed.
What would change this call
Grafana Mimir v3.0 (Nov 2025) independent benchmark results vs VictoriaMetrics. Would show whether VictoriaMetrics' cost-efficiency lead is narrowing.
VictoriaMetrics completes SOC 2 certification (targeted late-2026). Would show readiness to win larger enterprise deals gated by compliance.
Grafana Cloud defaults or bundles Mimir ahead of VictoriaMetrics in its own dashboards. Would show Grafana using its platform ownership to squeeze out VictoriaMetrics.
Key numbers
  • 300%+ revenue growth reported in 2024 (2025-02-19)
  • 1 billion+ cumulative downloads by 2025 (2025-02-19)
  • 50+ named enterprise customers incl. Roblox, CERN, Spotify (2026-07-13)
Named risks
  • Grafana Labs could tighten Mimir integration or bundling to favor its own backend over VictoriaMetrics. Severity: high
  • SOC 2 certification still in progress as of mid-2026, potentially blocking larger enterprise deals. Severity: medium
  • Competitive intensification from Mimir v3.0, GreptimeDB, and PANW-backed Chronosphere could erode cost-efficiency lead. Severity: medium
  • Bootstrapped model limits capital versus well-funded rivals like Grafana Labs (~$500M+ raised). Severity: medium
  • No disclosed financials means true revenue and profitability remain unverifiable to outside stakeholders. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is VictoriaMetrics profitable?
VictoriaMetrics has never raised external venture funding and is self-funded/bootstrapped, per a Register interview dated 2023-12-11 and a 2026-01-11 profile. No disclosed profit figures exist, but sustained bootstrapped operation since 2018 implies positive cash flow rather than VC-subsidized losses.
Who owns VictoriaMetrics?
VictoriaMetrics is privately held and founder-led, started in 2018 in Kyiv, Ukraine by Aliaksandr Valialkin, Roman Khavronenko, Dzmitry Lazerka, and Artem Navoiev, confirmed by a 2023-12-11 Register interview. It has taken no outside investment and remains independent as of 2026.
Is VictoriaMetrics a safe company to join?
The company reports 50% headcount growth in 2024 concentrated in engineering and 300%+ business growth that year, per its own 2025-02-19 blog post. It remains bootstrapped and profitable-by-necessity with no layoffs reported, and was actively posting engineering roles as of mid-2026.
Who is VictoriaMetrics' biggest competitor?
Grafana Labs is the closest rival: it owns the Mimir metrics backend, which competes directly with VictoriaMetrics, and controls the Grafana dashboard layer that VictoriaMetrics typically sits behind. Grafana Labs released Mimir v3.0 in November 2025, intensifying the competition.
Could AI replace VictoriaMetrics?
Unlikely in the near term: VictoriaMetrics' core value is its storage-engine performance and compression IP for high-cardinality time-series data, not an AI-replaceable advisory task. The company itself shipped an AI copilot inside its own Anomaly Detection product in Q1 2026, using AI to extend rather than replace its offering.
How fast is VictoriaMetrics growing?
VictoriaMetrics reports (vendor-claimed) 300%+ growth in 2024 and 320% growth in 2023, per its own 2025-02-19 blog post. Cumulative software downloads reportedly surpassed 1 billion by 2025, up from 268 million in 2023.
