The call

VinFast is growing fast in Vietnam and losing money faster, staying afloat only as long as Vượng keeps writing checks.

VinFast makes electric vehicles in Vietnam and sells them there at a commanding market share, with sales growing fast. However, the company loses money on every car it sells (negative 73.6% gross margin means costs far exceed revenue), and only survives because founder Phạm Nhật Vượng keeps pouring billions of his own money into the company. Cheaper Chinese competitors like BYD and Chery are now entering Vietnam with lower costs, and VinFast's U.S. expansion has collapsed with lawsuits and dealer closures. The one thing that could change everything is whether the company can actually stop losing so much money per car by the middle or end of 2026, because without that, the owner will eventually run out of patience or money.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the fight here; the threat is cheaper Chinese factories and unit economics, not software. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: BYD, Chery. BYD and Chery are already selling lower-cost EVs inside Vietnam, VinFast's one profitable-looking market. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Vingroup's dealership network, financing, and Phạm Nhật Vượng's repeated cash injections keep cars moving and bills paid.
What would change this call
VinFast's Vietnam market share vs BYD/Chery through H2 2026. Would show whether Chinese rivals are eroding VinFast's #1 home-market position.
VFTP manufacturing asset sale closing on schedule in Q3 2026. Would show whether the debt-shifting restructuring proceeds without creditor or shareholder objection.
Q2/Q3 2026 gross margin staying in the -70s or improving. Would show whether the 2027 breakeven guidance is credible or unraveling.

Questions people ask
Is VinFast profitable in 2026?
No. VinFast posted a gross margin of negative 73.6% in Q1 2026, partly due to a $192M free-charging revenue deduction, with net loss margin at negative 121.6%. FY2025 net loss hit a record ~$3.87 billion, up 26% YoY, per its June 2026 earnings release.
Who owns VinFast?
VinFast is controlled by Vingroup JSC (~83.6%) and founder Phạm Nhật Vượng personally (~14.3%), together over 97% as of 2026 per Simply Wall St ownership data. Public float is minimal since its August 2023 SPAC merger with Black Spade Acquisition Co.
Is VinFast's US expansion failing?
Yes. US vehicle registrations fell 57% year over year through October 2025, and dealership count sits below 22 versus an original 125 target as of December 2025. North Carolina's Attorney General sued in 2026 over the stalled Chatham County factory site.
Is VinFast losing to BYD?
It's contested. In Southeast Asia in 2025, BYD grew unit sales 95% YoY versus VinFast's 90% YoY, per an April 2026 KrASIA report. Both are expanding fast, but BYD has a profitable core business while VinFast posted a $3.87 billion net loss in 2025.
Could AI replace VinFast's driving features?
Not currently. VinFast outsources its autonomy stack to Autobrains and NVIDIA, announcing a Level 4 robotaxi pilot for Southeast Asia in June 2026 and a camera-only L2++ 'Robo-Car' system on the VF8/VF9. As of July 2026 it remains PR-stage, gated behind unestablished regional regulatory approval.
What is the VinFast VFTP restructuring deal?
In May 2026 VinFast agreed to sell its Vietnam manufacturing arm (VFTP) to a buyer group led by Future Investment Research and Development JSC for about $530 million, shifting roughly $7 billion in debt off its books, targeted to close Q3 2026.
