The call

Volpara no longer trades on its own; it is now the US mammography arm of Lunit, and its fate depends on how Lunit runs that arm.

Volpara built software that helps doctors spot cancer risk by measuring breast density in mammogram images. It had real customers at over 2,000 U.S. hospitals and screening programs, plus a large database of 117 million past images that would be hard for a competitor to rebuild. However, the company was acquired by a South Korean firm called Lunit in May 2024 for about $193 million and stopped trading as a separate stock, so betting on Volpara now means betting on Lunit instead. The key question is whether Lunit will keep Volpara's product as its own separate line or merge it into Lunit's competing breast-analysis tool, which could happen as the combined company cuts costs in 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: Lunit's own INSIGHT MMG mammography AI (parent product). Parent Lunit sells a competing mammography AI line, raising the chance Volpara's density tech gets folded in or sidelined during 2026 cost cuts. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Hologic (Quantra density software bundled with its mammography hardware). Hologic bundles its own density scoring onto the scanners hospitals already buy, competing for the same workflow slot. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulatory clearance plus install base: 2,000+ US sites and national screening program integrations are costly to rip out.
What would change this call
Lunit reports 2026 cost cuts or FTE reductions affecting former-Volpara teams. Would show parent is deprioritizing Volpara's product line for its own INSIGHT MMG stack.
Volpara's density/QC product loses its distinct branding or roadmap by end of 2026. Would confirm internal consolidation onto Lunit's competing INSIGHT MMG platform.
Hologic announces a vendor-neutral density product decoupled from its imaging hardware. Would show the main incumbent closing the gap Volpara relied on for differentiation.
Key numbers
  • Lunit paid about US$193M to acquire Volpara (2024-05-22)
  • Over 2,000 US medical sites used Volpara at acquisition (2024-05-22)
  • Lunit passed 1M+ mammograms analyzed in the US post-deal (2025-05-19)
Named risks
  • Internal cannibalization as parent Lunit's INSIGHT MMG overlaps directly with Volpara's density product. Severity: high
  • Commoditization risk shown by only fair-to-moderate (kappa ~0.5) cross-vendor density agreement. Severity: medium
  • Financial opacity: no standalone Volpara financials disclosed since May 2024 delisting. Severity: medium
  • Leadership churn: CEO Teri Thomas departed April 2025 to lead a competing imaging-software firm. Severity: medium
  • Hardware incumbents (Hologic, GE, Siemens) bundling AI density tools onto their own machines undercuts vendor-neutral positioning. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Volpara Health Technologies still an independently listed company?
No. Lunit completed a ~US$193M acquisition of Volpara in May 2024 and Volpara delisted from the ASX shortly after, on 2024-05-28. In November 2025 Volpara's global operations were fully rebranded as Lunit International.
Who owns Volpara Health now?
Volpara is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lunit (KRX:328130), the South Korean AI-oncology company that completed its acquisition of Volpara for approximately US$193 million on 2024-05-22, financed partly via convertible bonds.
Is Volpara profitable?
Volpara posted its first-ever positive half-year EBITDA of NZ$0.8M in H2 FY24 (year ended 2024-03-31), though full-year net margin was still -20%. Since the 2024 Lunit acquisition, standalone financials are no longer disclosed; Lunit targets group profitability in 2026.
Could AI replace Volpara's breast-density software?
Volpara's density and quality tools are themselves AI algorithms, so displacement risk is competitive rather than technological. Peer-reviewed studies through 2024-2026 show only fair-to-moderate agreement (kappa ~0.5) between Volpara, Lunit's INSIGHT MMG, and radiologists, signaling commoditization risk.
Who is Volpara Health's biggest competitor?
Its most direct rival is now inside its own parent: Lunit's INSIGHT MMG AI-CAD product has been head-to-head compared against Volpara's density algorithm in studies through 2026. External rivals include Hologic Quantra, iCAD, and GE/Siemens AI mammography tools.
What is Volpara's flagship product and how widely is it used?
TruDensity, its volumetric breast-density measurement software, was deployed at over 2,000 US medical sites and backed by a 117M-plus image repository at the time of Lunit's acquisition on 2024-05-22, per Lunit's own acquisition statement.
