Vueling Airlines
Spanish low-cost airline, Barcelona's dominant carrier, owned by IAG.
Vueling makes money and controls its home hub, with Ryanair pushing hard everywhere else in Spain and an EU pricing case as the main thing to watch.
Vueling runs a low-cost airline based in Barcelona with strong profits and nearly 38 million passengers per year. It is hard to compete with because it controls almost half of the airport slots at Barcelona (the takeoff and landing rights that regulators hand out and don't easily give away), it has the certifications required to fly in Europe, and its parent company IAG provides steady backing and customer loyalty rewards. Ryanair is the main competitor but cannot easily get into Barcelona the way Vueling can. The one thing to watch is whether the European Union forces all airlines to let passengers buy bags separately instead of bundling them with tickets, which would cut into Vueling's extra fee income but probably would not destroy the business.
Ryanair's passenger share at Barcelona-El Prat over the next 12 months. Any rise above token levels would show the slot fortress starting to erode.
Boeing 737 MAX first deliveries to Vueling, expected Q4 2026. Delay or certification slippage would disrupt fleet renewal and cost plans.
- 2025 net profit up to €234.5m from €213.7m
- About 45% passenger share at Barcelona airport
- Q1 2026 operating profit €27m vs a €55m loss a year earlier
- 27% YoY fuel cost spike guided by IAG for 2026 could compress Vueling margins.
- EU infringement proceedings against Spain could force unbundled-pricing rules, hitting ancillary revenue.
- Boeing 737 MAX delivery/certification slippage could disrupt fleet transition starting Q4 2026.
- Recurrent European labor strikes, e.g. Italy-wide action Feb 2026, disrupt operations seasonally.
- Unresolved Spanish investigation into July 2025 Guardia Civil removal incident could generate reputational fallout.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ryanair | contesting | Spain's #1 carrier overall, gaining share at Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Valencia as of Aug 2025 but locked out of Barcelona |
| Iberia | gaining on | Vueling overtook Iberia in Spanish passenger volumes per Aena, H1 2025 |
| EasyJet | contesting | Co-fined €179m combined with Vueling for hand-luggage fees, Nov 2024, competes across Spanish LCC market |
| Volotea | contesting | Secondary Spanish LCC competitor, also fined in Nov 2024 hand-luggage ruling |
- Is Vueling Airlines profitable in 2025?
- Yes. Vueling's statutory annual accounts show a net profit of €234.5m for 2025, up from €213.7m in 2024, and Q1 2026 operating profit swung to €27m from a €55m loss in Q1 2025, per IAG filings.
- Who owns Vueling Airlines?
- Vueling is 97.52% owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), the London/Madrid-listed parent that also owns British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and LEVEL. Vueling has no independent stock listing; ownership figure is per statutory filings as of 31 December 2025.
- Is Ryanair beating Vueling in Spain?
- Ryanair is Spain's #1 carrier by overall traffic and is gaining share at Madrid, Malaga, Seville and Valencia (as of August 2025), but Vueling holds roughly 45% passenger share at its Barcelona-El Prat fortress hub, where Ryanair has no meaningful slot presence.
- Could AI replace Vueling's operations?
- No. Vueling launched a Google Gemini AI customer-experience feature in July 2026, but its core business depends on airport slots, EASA operating certificates, and physical aircraft, none of which AI can replicate; the moat is regulatory and physical, not informational.
- Did Vueling overtake Iberia in Spain?
- Yes. Per Aena data cited in July 2025 reporting, Vueling overtook sibling IAG brand Iberia in passengers carried at Spanish airports in H1 2025, helped by a 9% capacity increase at Barcelona and favorable labor-cost deals.
- What legal trouble is Vueling in over baggage fees?
- Spain fined Vueling €39.26m (part of a €179m combined fine on five LCCs) in November 2024 for hand-luggage charges; the EU Commission opened infringement proceedings against Spain over this on 8 October 2025, and Madrid's High Court granted Vueling precautionary measures in July 2025.
