The call

Walden's healthcare licensure programs give it cover that its generic degrees lack, while regulatory and legal exposure through 2027 keeps the picture unsettled.

Walden University runs online degree programs mostly in business, IT, management, and healthcare, taught mainly by part-time teachers. It has real protection in nursing and healthcare degrees because those need specific state licenses and accreditation, but competitors like Southern New Hampshire University, Arizona State Online, and others have the same protections and are stealing students in business and IT. The bigger threat is that AI-powered short courses and employer-run training programs are replacing the need for full degrees in many fields, and Walden's reliance on part-time instructors makes it vulnerable to being undercut on cost. The one thing that could save it: if its healthcare programs grow much faster than the rest of the business, and if the Department of Education's investigation into past misleading advertising claims (due to wrap up in March 2027) doesn't create new legal or reputation damage.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven micro-credentials and bootcamps (Coursera, Google Career Certificates). Cheap AI-graded credentials chip away at Walden's generic business and IT degrees, which lean on adjunct-heavy delivery. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: SNHU, WGU, ASU Online, Capella, Grand Canyon University. These schools already hold the same accreditation and Title IV status, competing directly for the same online degree seekers. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Nursing and healthcare programs tied to state licensure, which generic online rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
DOE borrower-defense discharge process concludes or expands by March 30, 2027. Would show whether regulatory tail risk is closing or growing beyond the Carroll settlement.
Covista's post-rebrand capital allocation disclosed at Feb 2026 Investor Day and FY2026 earnings. Shows whether investment shifts toward Walden's nursing/healthcare core versus generic degrees.
SNHU, ASU Online, or WGU launch or scale accredited online nursing/healthcare programs. Would show incumbents encroaching on Walden's remaining differentiated moat.
