The call

Disney's parks and live sports keep the profits flowing while its streaming and studio arms fight AI copycats and Netflix for attention.

Disney makes money from theme parks, cruise ships, and sports broadcasting, plus streaming and movies. Theme parks and sports are nearly impossible for rivals to copy because they require real physical places and exclusive deals that take decades to build. Netflix has more streaming subscribers, but that is a different business from parks, and AI video tools cannot replace the experience of visiting a park or watching live sports. The big question is whether Disney can keep its streaming business profitable while protecting its characters and stories from being copied by artificial intelligence companies.

Why
01
AI pressure: Midjourney, MiniMax and generative image/video tools. AI tools can copy characters cheaply, so Disney is suing Midjourney and fighting MiniMax in court to keep control of its own IP. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Netflix. Netflix has over 325 million subscribers, more than double Disney+, and keeps winning the streaming attention war. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Theme parks, cruises and live sports rights make up most of Disney's profit and nobody can build a rival Magic Kingdom overnight.

Questions people ask
Is Walt Disney profitable in 2026?
Yes. Disney posted FY2025 net income of $12.4 billion on $94.4 billion revenue (year ended Sept 27, 2025), and Q2 FY2026 adjusted EPS of $1.57 beat estimates, with guidance for 12% adjusted EPS growth in FY2026.
Could AI replace Walt Disney's business?
Unlikely for its core. 57% of Disney's operating income comes from physical Experiences (parks, cruises) that AI cannot replicate, and Disney is actively suing Midjourney and MiniMax over character infringement, with a MiniMax dismissal motion rejected May 26, 2026.
Is Netflix Disney's biggest competitor?
In streaming, yes. Netflix had 325M+ global paid members as of Q1 2026, over twice Disney's last disclosed combined Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ base of roughly 196-220 million reported in September 2025.
Who owns Walt Disney?
Disney is a publicly traded, widely held company (NYSE: DIS) with no controlling parent, market cap roughly $166-170 billion as of mid-July 2026. Josh D'Amaro became CEO on March 18, 2026, succeeding Bob Iger.
Why is Disney stock down in 2026?
Disney shares were down about 20% over the trailing 52 weeks and trading near a 52-week low of $92.19 as of July 20, 2026, amid a CEO transition, a Moana box-office flop, and analyst debate over streaming strategy.
Will Disney exit streaming?
Not confirmed. A Wells Fargo note on July 14, 2026 proposed Disney abandon streaming for a pure-licensing model, citing 40% potential upside, but Disney's own guidance still targets double-digit EPS growth into FY2027 via Disney+/Hulu.
