The call

WatchGuard survives on channel lock-in while its core firewall category shrinks under AI-native detection tools and Microsoft's bundled security push.

WatchGuard makes firewall and security appliances sold mainly through IT support companies (called MSPs) who manage networks for small and medium-sized businesses. It is hard to leave WatchGuard once you have installed it, which gives the company some protection, but that advantage is shrinking because Microsoft is bundling similar security tools free with its Office subscriptions, and newer AI-powered security platforms from CrowdStrike and SentinelOne do what WatchGuard does in software rather than hardware boxes. The biggest question is whether the new leadership will raise prices to make more money per customer (which worked for other companies owned by the same investor), or whether that will cause the IT support shops to switch to rivals like Fortinet or Palo Alto Networks instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender. AI-native XDR/MDR automates threat detection appliances used to handle, pulling budget and mindshare from Firebox. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Defender for Business bundled into M365). Microsoft bundles security into M365 licenses SMBs already buy, squeezing the standalone security budget WatchGuard depends on. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 25,000 MSP partners and 1.5 million installed customers create switching costs that keep renewals flowing even as new-logo growth stalls.
What would change this call
WatchGuard discloses a major CVE or breach within 12 months. Would show the appliance-based model is losing MSP trust like SonicWall's 2025 incidents did.
CEO Smolarski imposes MSP pricing changes similar to his Kaseya moves. Would show whether the 'Kaseya playbook' triggers partner defection or channel growth.
Vector Capital sells, IPOs, or recaps WatchGuard within the next year. Would clarify if the PE exit rewards or strips the company ahead of a sale.
Key numbers
  • Firebox mindshare fell to 2.2% from 2.9% (Jul 2026)
  • 25,000 MSP partners, 1.5M+ customers (Jul 2026)
  • Last audited revenue $252.1M (2022)
Named risks
  • Firebox mindshare eroded from 2.9% to 2.2% year over year as of July 2026. Severity: high
  • Firewall/VPN vendors are a leading ransomware initial-access vector; a WatchGuard CVE could damage MSP trust. Severity: high
  • Vector Capital is 4+ years into its 2022 majority stake with no confirmed exit path for employee equity. Severity: medium
  • New CEO's 'Kaseya playbook' price hikes could trigger MSP channel defection as seen at Kaseya. Severity: medium
  • No independently audited revenue figure since FY2022, limiting visibility into current financial health. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is WatchGuard Technologies profitable?
WatchGuard is private and does not disclose profit. Its last audited revenue figure is $252.1M for FY2022 (Wikipedia, 2026-06-25). Former CEO Panjwani claimed ARR 'more than tripled' from 2015-2025, but no independently audited current revenue or profit figure exists as of July 2026.
Who owns WatchGuard Technologies?
Vector Capital is the majority owner. It bought out Francisco Partners and other co-investors in April/July 2022, becoming sole majority owner (2022-07-05). Vector Capital has held this majority stake for over four years as of mid-2026, with no confirmed exit process announced.
Could AI replace WatchGuard's products?
WatchGuard's core work, signature detection and log correlation, overlaps with AI-native XDR/MDR platforms like CrowdStrike and SentinelOne. WatchGuard responded by acquiring AI-MDR firm ActZero (2025-01-07) and hiring a CPO in July 2026 explicitly to drive 'AI-Driven Innovation,' signaling defensive urgency rather than a settled lead.
Is WatchGuard losing market share to Fortinet?
Yes on relative mindshare trend. PeerSpot data (2026-07-09) shows WatchGuard Firebox mindshare fell from 2.9% to 2.2% year over year, while Fortinet FortiGate, despite also declining (21.4% to 14.5%), still holds roughly 6.5x WatchGuard's category mindshare.
Who is WatchGuard's CEO and what is his strategy?
Joe Smolarski, former president of Kaseya, was named permanent CEO on 2025-11-05. He is pursuing a 'Kaseya playbook' of M&A and margin extraction for the MSP channel, following interim CEO Vats Srivatsan (ex-SentinelOne COO) who briefly led after Prakash Panjwani's May 2025 departure.
What is WatchGuard's biggest competitive threat?
Microsoft Defender for Business, bundled free into M365 licenses SMBs already pay for, undercuts WatchGuard's entire budget category. Separately, Fortinet still dominates firewall mindshare at 14.5% versus WatchGuard's 2.2% as of July 2026, per PeerSpot data.
