The call

A century-old certified valve maker growing on plumbing codes and a small but fast data-center segment, with Zurn Elkay the one name worth watching.

Watts Water makes water safety and flow products for buildings, factories, and data centers. It is hard to replace because plumbing code rules require specific certifications that take years to get, contractors stick with brands they know and trust, and switching out installed pipes is expensive and disruptive, which new companies or AI tools cannot easily work around. The one big risk is that data-center demand (still only a small part of sales) is driving recent growth, so if tech companies slow down their spending on new data centers, Watts' growth could drop back to normal levels and hurt the stock price even though the core business stays solid.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not eating this business; data-center buildouts are a growing customer for their cooling and flow valves. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Zurn Elkay (NYSE: ZWS). Closest certified peer in plumbing codes, but no evidence yet of it winning share in Watts' backflow or mixing-valve lines. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. NSF/ASSE code certifications, decades of contractor and distributor relationships, and installed-base switching costs.
What would change this call
Zurn Elkay, Xylem, or Honeywell ships a certified competing backflow or mixing-valve line winning contractor share. Would show Watts' distribution and certification moat is being breached.
Data-center vertical growth rate in Q2 2026 earnings (~August 5, 2026) versus Q1's 21% reported growth. Slowdown would show recent outperformance was hyperscaler-capex driven, not core-market share gains.
Europe organic sales trend in upcoming quarters versus Q2 2025's -8%. Continued decline would show structural weakness rather than temporary cyclical drag.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 net sales $2.44B, up 8% reported (2025-12-31)
  • Q1 2026 sales $677M, up 21%, data-center driven (2026-03-31)
  • Dividend raised 21% for 14th straight year (2026-05-06)
Named risks
  • Data-center vertical is only ~3% of 2025 sales but drove Q1 2026 outperformance; cooling demand could revert growth to mid-single digits. Severity: medium
  • Tariff escalation beyond the $40M absorbed in 2025 could force material price compression. Severity: medium
  • Europe organic sales fell 8% in Q2 2025 with no confirmed recovery timeline. Severity: medium
  • Integration risk across 8 acquisitions since 2023 totaling ~$660M could break margin or organic-growth trends. Severity: medium
  • 80/20 portfolio rationalization eliminating $35 to 45M of sales in 2026 carries execution risk. Severity: low

No. Watts makes physical, code-certified plumbing hardware (backflow preventers, relief valves) requiring NSF/ASSE/CSA certification and decades of contractor relationships. Who is Watts Water Technologies' biggest competitor?

Is Watts Water Technologies laying off employees?
No evidence of layoffs; headcount instead grew by 900 employees (+18.75%) to 5,700 as of December 31, 2025, from 4,800 the prior year, tracking the company's acquisition of eight companies since 2023.
What is driving Watts Water Technologies' growth in 2026?
Data center demand is a key driver: Q1 2026 net sales rose 21% reported to $677M, substantially fueled by this vertical, even though data centers were just over 3% of FY2025 sales, per the company's May 7, 2026 earnings slides.
