The call

Readers are leaving and licensing revenue is shrinking while Kakao offers the same model, leaving Disney's unlaunched platform as the main hope for a turnaround.

Webtoon Entertainment runs a platform where creators post comics and readers pay to view them, with popular stories getting adapted into TV shows and movies. The company's strength comes from having lots of creators and readers in one place plus owning valuable stories from those adaptations, but competitors like Kakao (which owns Tapas) and Bilibili are building the exact same thing in their own regions and nothing legally stops them from doing so. The one thing that could turn this around is either getting enough new readers to use Webtoon's new Disney comics service launching in 2026, or proving the platform can grow again instead of shrinking as it is now.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI art and story tools lowering the cost to make comics outside the platform. AI art tools let creators and rivals churn out comics cheaply, chipping at what made Webtoon's creator pool special. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Kakao Entertainment (Tapas). Kakao runs the same reader-creator-licensing model with no wall stopping it from pulling readers and titles away. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Naver and LY Corp together hold about 88% of shares, plus a library of licensed IP already tied up in deals.
What would change this call
Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 11, 2026) show revenue below the 1.7-4.6% CC guidance range. Would show the growth stall is deepening, not stabilizing.
Disney digital-comics platform consumer app fails to launch in 2026 or launches with weak adoption. Would show the key new distribution bet is not materializing.
MAU count in upcoming quarters stays below or falls further from 144.3M. Would show the reader-side network is still shrinking, not re-compounding.

Questions people ask
Is Webtoon Entertainment profitable in 2026?
Not yet on GAAP basis. Q1 2026 net loss narrowed to $8.8 million from $22.0 million a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA hit $9.5 million, up 132% YoY, as of March 31, 2026. The company holds $594.9 million cash and no debt.
Who owns Webtoon Entertainment?
South Korea's Naver Corporation holds roughly 63.3%, Japan's LY Corporation about 24.8%. Disney bought an approximate 2% stake as part of an expanded platform partnership, with that deal closing January 9, 2026.
Is Kakao a threat to Webtoon Entertainment?
Yes. Kakao Entertainment owns Tapas and runs a directly comparable creator-and-reader ecosystem model with no structural barrier preventing it from contesting WEBTOON's share, especially alongside Japanese incumbents like Shueisha's Manga Plus.
Could AI replace Webtoon Entertainment?
Unlikely near-term. WEBTOON itself deploys AI for translation and recommendations, crediting it with lifting monthly paying users 2.2% in Q1 2026, but its moat rests on licensed IP deals (Disney, DC, HYBE) and creator relationships AI cannot replicate.
Is Webtoon Entertainment growing or shrinking?
Mixed and stalling. Q1 2026 revenue fell 1.5% YoY to $320.9 million and monthly active users dropped 5.9% to 144.3 million, while IP Adaptations revenue plunged 22.8% YoY to $19.75 million as of March 31, 2026.
Will Webtoon Entertainment hit its double-digit growth target?
Management guided to double-digit revenue growth by Q4 2026, but its own Q2 2026 guidance of only 1.7% to 4.6% constant-currency growth and $0 to $5 million adjusted EBITDA falls well short of that goal as of May 11, 2026.
