The call

WeLab turned profitable and raised fresh capital, but sits mid-pack among eight Hong Kong digital banks that all share the same license and the same AI tools.

WeLab Bank is a licensed digital bank in Hong Kong that lends money and takes deposits online, serving over 70 million users. It is hard to replace because it has a government license that only a few companies can get, but that same license belongs to six other banks like ZA Bank and Mox that do almost the exact same thing and some are already bigger and more profitable. WeLab uses AI to cut costs and catch bad loans faster than competitors, but all the other banks use AI too, so that does not give it an edge. The key question is whether WeLab stays profitable through 2026 and whether its new $220 million in funding is a sign of strength or a sign it needed cash to keep up.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools cut WeLab's own cost-to-income ratio from 86% to 67% rather than threatening its business model. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: HSBC and Standard Chartered, both WeLab investors and rivals via the Mox Bank joint venture. HSBC funds WeLab's Series D while also backing Mox, a rival digital bank with deeper capital and distribution. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. HKMA banking license lets WeLab take deposits, a barrier that blocks new entrants even though seven other licensed banks share it.

Questions people ask
Is WeLab Bank profitable in 2026?
WeLab Bank hit its first monthly breakeven in December 2024 and swung from a HK$174M loss to profit in H1 2025, with revenue up about 70% YoY. Full-year 2026 profitability is projected but not yet confirmed as of July 2026 reporting.
Who is WeLab Bank's biggest competitor in Hong Kong?
ZA Bank is WeLab Bank's largest rival, the biggest HK virtual bank by users and the first to post full-year profitability in 2025, ahead of WeLab Bank and Mox Bank, which reached breakeven only in early 2026.
Could AI replace WeLab Bank?
No. WeLab holds a scarce HKMA banking license and Indonesian license via Bank Jasa Jakarta that AI cannot replicate. AI (Gemini via a September 2025 Google Cloud deal) is used internally to cut cost-to-income ratio from 86% to 67%, not to replace the bank itself.
Is WeLab a safe company to join in 2026?
WeLab shows growth signals, 1,640 employees as of December 2025 (up from 921 in 2023) and a $220M Series D closed January 2026, but it operates in a crowded field of 8 licensed HK digital banks where several rivals already lead on profitability.
Who owns WeLab?
WeLab is privately held, founded by Simon Loong, Kelly Wong and Frances Kang around 2012-2013. Its January 2026 Series D investors include Prudential Hong Kong, Fubon Bank, HKIC, TOM Group, Allianz X and HSBC, valued near $1B as of an April 2025 round.
How much funding has WeLab raised?
Estimates vary by source: roughly $1.1B to $1.4B across 14+ rounds since 2015, per Caplight (2026-03-31) and CB Insights data, including a $220M Series D strategic financing that closed in January 2026.
