The call

WeRide is growing fast and holding permits in more places than most rivals, but it still trails Baidu, Waymo, and Pony.ai on fleet size and has not proven it can make money per vehicle.

WeRide operates fleets of self-driving taxis in eight Chinese cities, bringing in nearly $100 million per year and doubling its business year-over-year. The hard part is that bigger competitors like Baidu, Waymo, and Pony.ai are also building self-driving taxi fleets in many of the same places, and none of them have a special advantage that the others cannot copy, as long as they have enough money and permits. The one thing that will decide WeRide's future is whether it can make each self-driving taxi profitable before it runs out of cash, because right now it burns money even though its cars are starting to make money on each trip.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tesla robotaxi/FSD stack. Tesla's own driving AI could scale robotaxi service without WeRide's permit-by-permit model, undercutting cost per vehicle. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Baidu Apollo Go. Baidu already runs a larger robotaxi fleet and city footprint inside China, WeRide's home market. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Permits and operating licenses across 12 countries plus partnerships like Uber give WeRide reach smaller rivals lack yet.
What would change this call
WeRide's Q2 2026 earnings (due ~Aug 2026) show revenue growth below 58% YoY. Would show its growth is decelerating relative to larger rivals like Baidu and Waymo.
Fleet size falls short of the 2,000-3,000 vehicle target by end of 2026. Would show WeRide is losing scale race against Pony.ai's 3,000+ robotaxi push.
Baidu's Apollo Go launches robotaxi service in a market where WeRide already holds permits. Would show Baidu directly displacing WeRide in its own international footprint.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue ~$97.9M, up 90% year over year (2025-12-31)
  • Global L4 robotaxi fleet ~1,300 vehicles, 12 countries (2026-04-30)
  • Gross margin 30.2% for FY2025 (2025-12-31)
Named risks
  • Unproven per-vehicle unit economics; still operating at a loss despite 30.2% gross margin (FY2025). Severity: high
  • Sector-wide regulatory scrutiny risk after Baidu Apollo Go's Wuhan malfunction incident, April 1, 2026. Severity: medium
  • Stock down from $44 all-time high to ~$6-$6.50 in 2026, signaling dilution and investor caution. Severity: medium
  • No structural barrier stops better-funded rivals (Baidu, Waymo, Pony.ai) replicating permit-based moat. Severity: high
  • Conflicting headcount and financial figures across data sources create evidence-quality uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is WeRide profitable in 2026?
No. WeRide's FY2025 operating loss narrowed 15.5% year over year but the company remains unprofitable, with gross margin at 30.2% as of December 31, 2025. Revenue reached RMB684.6M (about $97.9M), up 90% YoY, per its March 23, 2026 earnings release.
Who is WeRide's biggest competitor?
Baidu Apollo Go leads China's robotaxi market with the largest fleet, Waymo leads globally after raising $16B in February 2026, and Pony.ai targets 3,000-plus robotaxis in 2026. Axios's Road to Autonomy Index ranked WeRide 4th globally as of June 17, 2026.
Could AI replace WeRide's business?
No, AI is the tool WeRide uses, not its replacement. Its GENESIS world-model (launched January 27, 2026) and WITT foundation model (launched July 17, 2026) accelerate simulation testing, but WeRide's moat rests on multi-market permits, fleet data across 40-plus cities, and OEM tie-ups like Geely Farizon.
Is WeRide stock a safe investment right now?
It's volatile. WeRide's stock fell from an all-time high of $44.00 to trading around $6 to $6.50 between March and June 2026, with market cap near $1.88B to $2.14B as of July 24, 2026, reflecting dilution from its November 2025 HKEX offering and unproven unit economics.
Who owns WeRide?
WeRide is publicly traded, dual-listed on Nasdaq (WRD, since October 25, 2024) and HKEX (0800, since November 6, 2025). Founder Tony Han holds Chairman and CEO roles with a weighted-voting-rights structure preserved through the HK listing; no controlling parent company exists.
Is WeRide growing fast?
Yes. FY2025 revenue hit RMB684.6M (~$97.9M), up 90% YoY, and Q1 2026 revenue rose 58% YoY to RMB114M (~$16.5M) as of March 31, 2026. Its combined autonomous fleet exceeded 3,000 vehicles by July 17, 2026.
