The call

Whop is growing fast on a seller base still tied to gambling and trading tips, with Shopify circling from above and AI agents circling from below.

Whop built a marketplace where creators sell digital products like sports tips and trading signals to millions of buyers, and it grew very fast by focusing on areas that bigger companies like Shopify ignored. However, the things that kept Shopify away are now disappearing: government regulators are cracking down on prediction markets and sports betting tips, and new AI tools can now do much of what Whop does, like building storefronts and writing sales copy. The main risk is that if regulators tighten rules on gambling and betting communities, Whop could lose a big chunk of its customers and revenue, which would force it to prove it can succeed in other areas instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: Claude, Cursor, Replit and similar AI agents/no-code builders. AI agents can spin up storefronts, gating, and copy in minutes; Whop's new CLI bets AI will route through it instead of around it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Shopify. Shopify has the scale and payments stack to add creator-community features but has not shipped a direct competitor yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Payments licensing, marketplace lock-in, and a seller base still concentrated in gambling and trading tip communities others avoid.
What would change this call
Congressional or CFTC action against sports-betting or prediction-market platforms within 12 months. Would show Whop's gambling-adjacent seller base is at regulatory risk.
Shopify launches a dedicated creator-community or digital-product commerce offering within 12-18 months. Would show the giant it avoided is now contesting Whop's core market.
Measurable monthly revenue or seller adoption reported for Whop's CLI agent-storefront feature within a year. Would show whether the AI-agent rails bet is gaining real traction.

Questions people ask
Is Whop profitable in 2026?
Whop has not disclosed profitability. Third-party analyst Sacra estimated $142M annualized revenue by October 2025, up 255% year over year, with platform MRR near $60.2M by December 2025, but no net income figures have been published.
Who owns Whop and is it public?
Whop is privately held, founded 2021 by Steven Schwartz, Cameron Zoub, and Jack Sharkey. Backers include Insight Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, and Tether, which invested $200M in February 2026 at a $1.6B valuation. No IPO has been announced.
Could AI replace Whop's business?
Core storefront setup, community gating, and marketing copy are automatable by generic AI agents and no-code tools. Whop responded by launching a CLI on July 21, 2026 so AI agents like Claude and Cursor can run stores through its rails, but adoption is unproven days after launch.
Is Shopify Whop's biggest competitor?

Per Sacra as of February 8, 2026, Whop reported 18.4M+ users, 183,628 sellers, roughly 4M monthly marketplace visitors, and $2.67B in cumulative lifetime GMV since its 2021 founding.
