Wintermute moves real volume across the crypto world, but its edge is a head start rather than a lock, and bigger, richer trading firms are now walking onto its turf.

Wintermute buys and sells cryptocurrency for large institutions and exchanges, making money on the difference in prices across different platforms. Seven years of relationships with crypto exchanges gives it an advantage right now, but that lead is fragile because richer firms like Citadel Securities and Jane Street are now moving into crypto trading and can spend more money on better computer technology and staff. The biggest question is whether these traditional finance giants will be allowed to fully enter the crypto market as regulators become more comfortable with it, which would squeeze Wintermute's profits and partners.
