The call

CargoWise still runs the world's freight paperwork, but new pricing, layoffs, and a criminal probe of its founder are testing that hold at the same time.

WiseTech Global makes CargoWise, software that helps freight forwarders and shippers move cargo across 195 countries. It is hard to replace because customers have locked in their entire operations to it, keep using it (99%+ stay loyal), and switching would be expensive and risky. AI tools could theoretically simplify logistics planning, but WiseTech is already building AI into its own product, and it now charges per shipment instead of per user, so AI does not easily undercut it. The real question is whether customers will tolerate 20-50% price increases starting this year while the company cuts its workforce by 29% (including half its customer service team), all while the founder faces criminal investigation in Australia. If customer retention holds and legal issues stay contained, the business is fine. If either cracks, the company's value could shift dramatically.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI rival runs freight workflows yet; WiseTech is folding agentic AI into CargoWise and repricing per transaction, not per seat. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Oracle, SAP, cloud-native logistics platforms. Oracle or SAP could someday bundle logistics modules into their ERP suites and undercut CargoWise's transaction pricing. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. CargoWise is wired into customs, tax, and carrier rules across 195 countries, and 99%+ of customers stay rather than rebuild that.
What would change this call
CargoWise retention rate reported in FY26 or Q1 FY27 results falls below 97%. Would show Value Pack pricing is pushing customers out despite the software's lock-in.
News of customers switching to GoFreight, Magaya, or Oracle/SAP TM after December 2025 price hikes. Would show rivals are actually capturing WiseTech's price-sensitive customers.
AFP/ASIC investigation of Richard White results in charges or board changes within 6 months. Would show legal risk is materializing into governance instability.

Questions people ask
Is WiseTech Global profitable in 2025?
Yes. WiseTech reported FY25 (year ended June 30, 2025) net income of $200.7 million, up roughly 14-16% year-on-year, on total revenue of $778.7 million, with CargoWise segment revenue up 18% to $682.2 million, per its August 2025 earnings release.
Could AI replace WiseTech's CargoWise platform?
Unlikely soon. CEO Zubin Appoo says CargoWise sits at the center of global trade with proprietary data and integrations across 195 countries that a generic AI tool cannot replicate. WiseTech is instead embedding agentic AI features into CargoWise itself, as of its 2026 Investor Day materials.
Who owns WiseTech Global?
WiseTech trades publicly on the ASX (ticker WTC) with no parent company. Co-founder Richard White remains the largest shareholder at roughly 33-37% of shares as of October 28, 2025, after co-founder Maree Isaacs sold her family holding stake to him in December 2025.
Is it safe to take a job at WiseTech Global right now?
There is real risk: WiseTech announced in February 2026 it will cut about 2,000 roles (roughly 29% of its global workforce) through FY27, with product/development and customer-service teams facing up to 50% reductions, framed as an AI-driven transformation, per ABC News, February 25, 2026.
Who is WiseTech Global's biggest competitor?
Descartes Systems Group is the closest diversified rival, serving shippers and carriers directly, while Oracle and SAP offer transportation modules within broader ERP suites. No competitor has taken meaningful share from CargoWise's roughly 70% forwarding-software segment as of mid-2026, per trade press.
Is Richard White facing criminal charges at WiseTech?
Not yet as of mid-2026. Australian Federal Police and ASIC raided WiseTech's Sydney offices on October 28, 2025 over alleged share trading by White and three employees; a separate AFP human-exploitation taskforce probe was reported in June 2026. No charges had been filed as of these reports.
