The call

WorkOS's core auth business keeps growing steadily, while its $2B price tag rests on an unresolved fight over who owns AI-agent identity.

WorkOS builds login and permission systems that big companies trust because they follow strict rules and work with many other tools. It's hard to copy because companies that switch away lose months of setup time and complicated connections to their other software. However, Vercel just bought Better Auth and is bundling it free with coding tools, Microsoft is adding AI-powered identity features to its Entra product, and Okta is building AI-focused identity for agents, all going after new companies that use AI. The one thing that could change everything is how fast these rivals get AI companies to adopt their bundle instead of paying WorkOS separately.

Why
01
AI pressure: Vercel's Better Auth bundle plus AI coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code). AI coding agents and Vercel's bundled Better Auth let developers generate login flows fast, cutting demand for WorkOS's APIs. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Okta (Auth for GenAI) and Microsoft Entra Agent ID. Okta and Microsoft are shipping agent-identity previews that could pull AI-native customers away from WorkOS. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Enterprise customers already wired into WorkOS's SSO and SCIM flows rarely rip out compliance-critical logins once live.
What would change this call
Vercel bundles Better Auth into default platform pricing/tiers. Shows greenfield developers may adopt auth without evaluating WorkOS.
Okta Auth for GenAI or Microsoft Entra Agent ID exits preview to GA with named enterprise customers. Shows incumbents can credibly serve the agent-identity segment WorkOS is pricing growth on.
A named AI-native customer like Anthropic, OpenAI, or Cursor publicly switches away from WorkOS. Would show WorkOS losing its flagship AI-era reference accounts.
Key numbers
  • $100M Series C at $2B valuation (2026-03-02)
  • $30M ARR (2025-11-06)
  • 1,000+ paying customers (2025-01-01)
Named risks
  • $2B valuation prices in unproven agent-identity frontier contested by Okta and Microsoft previews. Severity: high
  • Vercel's Better Auth acquisition (2026-07-07) could erode greenfield developer adoption via platform bundling. Severity: medium
  • AI coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code) lower cost of building auth in-house instead of buying WorkOS. Severity: medium
  • Publicly cited revenue figures are third-party estimates, not audited company disclosures. Severity: low
  • Lean headcount of 130 (June 2026) relative to $2B valuation could strain execution during rapid scaling. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is WorkOS profitable in 2026?
WorkOS has not disclosed profitability. It raised a $100M Series C at a $2B valuation on March 2, 2026, and third-party estimates put ARR at roughly $30M as of November 2025, still running on VC funding rather than disclosed profit.
What is WorkOS's valuation?
WorkOS reached a $2 billion valuation after closing a $100M Series C co-led by Meritech Capital and Sapphire Ventures on March 2, 2026, roughly double its prior valuation, per the company's own announcement.
Who is WorkOS's biggest competitor?
Okta (via Auth0) is the closest incumbent, having shipped 'Auth for GenAI' in Developer Preview by November 2, 2025. Vercel escalated pressure by acquiring open-source rival Better Auth on July 7, 2026, targeting the same developer-first auth market.
Could AI coding agents replace WorkOS?
AI tools like Cursor and Claude Code can now generate boilerplate SSO/SCIM code, lowering build-vs-buy friction, but WorkOS's compliance certifications, SLAs, and live enterprise integrations remain hard for AI-generated code to replicate as of mid-2026.
Who owns WorkOS?
WorkOS is privately held and VC-backed, founded in 2019 by CEO Michael Grinich. Investors include Meritech Capital, Sapphire Ventures, Greenoaks, Lightspeed, and Craft Ventures, following a March 2026 Series C at a $2B valuation.
How many customers does WorkOS have?
WorkOS crossed 1,000 paying customers by early 2025, up from around 200 in June 2022, per Sacra. Separately, tracking firm Bloomberry detected 644 companies actively using WorkOS as of July 12, 2026.
