Wormhole
Cross-chain protocol moving tokens and data across 35-45+ blockchains.
Wormhole moves real money and keeps landing institutional partners, but its token earns nothing and LayerZero, Chainlink, and AI-driven routing are closing in on its lead.
Wormhole is a bridge that lets different blockchains talk to each other and share value. About $59 billion has moved through it, and real companies use it. However, LayerZero does similar work and already connects to 90 different blockchains while Wormhole only connects to 35 to 45, plus Chainlink, a more trusted name, is also building competing connection tools. The biggest problem is that Wormhole's token W does not earn any money from the platform's activity, so even though people use it more and more, the token's value dropped from $1.15 to less than a penny. The one thing that could turn this around is if Wormhole activates its fee switch to make the token actually earn money from activity, or if it builds new tools that LayerZero and Chainlink cannot easily copy.
DefiLlama bridge share data shows Wormhole's message-volume share falling below its Q4 2025 ~20% mark. Would show LayerZero or CCIP is actively taking cross-chain volume from Wormhole.
A new major bridge exploit hits Wormhole or a closely tied ecosystem partner. Would show systemic security risk persists despite institutional integrations.
- $58.9B cumulative value transferred
- W token down ~99% from ATH, now ~$0.009
- ~20% share of cross-chain message volume
- W token holders receive zero protocol revenue since the fee switch remains inactive as of May 2026.
- Token value has collapsed ~99% from ATH ($1.15 to ~$0.009) despite rising usage, as of July 2026.
- LayerZero's faster chain expansion and CCIP's enterprise trust are eroding relative market share.
- Cross-chain bridge exploits remain systemic industry risk; same flaw class as Wormhole's 2022 hack recurred in May 2026 (Verus, $11.58M).
- No new funding round disclosed since November 2023, limiting visibility into current capital runway.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| LayerZero | losing to | LayerZero supports 90+ chains vs Wormhole's 35-45 and is gaining relative share as of June 2026 |
| Chainlink CCIP | losing to | Seen as the more enterprise-trusted cross-chain option per June 15, 2026 comparison |
| Axelar Network | contesting | Validator-based rival covering ~80+ chains with ~$2B TVL as of May 2026 |
- Is Wormhole profitable and does the W token earn revenue?
- No. As of May 2026, Wormhole's 'fee switch' has never been activated by governance, so protocol fee revenue to W token holders is effectively zero, even though the protocol has moved a cumulative $58.9B in value.
- Is the Wormhole (W) token a good investment right now?
- As of July 20, 2026, W traded near $0.0092-0.01 with a market cap of roughly $56.8M, down about 99% from its all-time high near $1.15, despite the protocol's usage growing to $58.9B cumulative volume.
- Who owns Wormhole and is it backed by Jump Crypto?
- Wormhole was incubated by Jump Crypto but formally split off in November 2023, raising $225M at a $2.5B valuation from Jump Trading, Brevan Howard, Coinbase Ventures and others. Governance now sits with the Cayman Islands based Wormhole Foundation.
- Is Wormhole safe to use after its 2022 hack?
- Wormhole lost $325M in a 2022 exploit, which Jump Trading personally repaid in full. Its Guardian network now uses a 19 node, 13-of-19 signature threshold, but similar cross chain flaw classes reappeared industry wide, including a $11.58M Verus-Ethereum exploit in May 2026.
- Who is Wormhole's biggest competitor?
- LayerZero is Wormhole's closest rival, supporting 90+ chains as of June 2026 versus Wormhole's 35-45, and is described as gaining relative market share. Chainlink CCIP is also cited as the more enterprise trusted option in the space.
- Could AI replace Wormhole's cross-chain infrastructure?
- Unlikely to fully replace it. AI agent frameworks like ElizaOS already call Wormhole programmatically as of May 2026, feeding volume rather than substituting the protocol, since its Guardian validator trust layer requires real institutional stake AI cannot replicate.
