The call

Xero is still growing fast and adding customers, but its CEO sold her whole stake, its CTO left, and the market is betting AI erodes the bookkeeping layer Xero built its business on.

Xero sells accounting and bookkeeping software to small businesses, mainly in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, competing with QuickBooks and others. The company has real strengths: accountants recommend it, banks plug into it directly, and switching costs are high. But the core work it does, like sorting transactions and filling in ledgers, is exactly what artificial intelligence like Claude can now do cheaply, and the market is already betting the threat is real, which is why Xero's stock has crashed 50 to 60 percent from its peak and two top executives left in 2026. The one thing that could save the picture is if Xero turns itself into an AI copilot that accountants and small business owners choose to stay with, rather than a platform that AI eventually replaces.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic-class generalist AI (Claude and similar agents doing bookkeeping directly). No shipped rival product yet, but markets are pricing in AI doing reconciliation and categorization without Xero's layer at all. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Intuit QuickBooks. Dominant in the US market where Xero is still the challenger, with far more capital to fund its own AI push. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Statutory tax compliance, 700+ bank feeds, and accountant workflow lock-in make ripping Xero out costly even if AI gets better.

Questions people ask
Is Xero profitable in 2026?
Xero's FY26 (year to March 31, 2026) operating income fell 13% to NZ$316.1m due to Melio acquisition costs, even though revenue grew 31% to NZ$2.75bn and adjusted EBITDA rose 18% to NZ$757m. So underlying cash generation improved while reported operating profit declined, a mixed picture reported May 14, 2026.
Could AI replace Xero's bookkeeping software?
Generalist AI threatens Xero's core tasks like reconciliation and categorization, which is why its stock fell 50-60% from its June 2025 peak by mid-July 2026. Xero is responding by shipping its own AI tools (JAX assistant, XeroForce agent builder, Claude integration) rather than being replaced outright, as of July 2026.
Who is Xero's biggest competitor?
Intuit QuickBooks is Xero's dominant rival, especially in the US where Xero is the challenger; Xero's US organic revenue grew 30% in FY26 (to March 2026) while still trailing QuickBooks' entrenched share. In ANZ and UK, Xero competes more as incumbent against MYOB and Sage.
Who owns Xero?
Xero is a public company listed on the ASX (ticker XRO, also OTC as XROLF), not privately held. CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy has led it since February 2023, though she sold her entire remaining stake worth about A$2.2m in July 2026 amid a deep share price decline.
Did Xero lay off staff in 2026?
Xero introduced an internal 'opt-out' program in July 2026 offering severance to underperforming employees amid cost pressure, following earlier 2023 layoffs of 700-800 roles (about 15% of staff). Headcount estimates for FY26 vary by source, ranging roughly 4,400 to 6,200 employees depending on methodology.
Why did Xero's CEO sell all her shares?
Sukhinder Singh Cassidy sold her entire remaining Xero stake, worth about A$2.2m, around July 15, 2026, while her stock options (struck at roughly A$171) sat deeply underwater against a share price of about A$68-74. The sale triggered further scrutiny and share price pressure.
