The call

Xiamen Airlines runs on government-granted routes and a profitable state parent, with AI and rival airlines circling the edges but not the license.

Xiamen Airlines flies passengers on routes across China and internationally, owned mostly by China Southern Airlines Group. It is very hard to replace because the Chinese government controls which airlines can fly which routes and controls the airport slots where planes take off and land. The airline also belongs to SkyTeam, a global partnership of airlines. The biggest risk is not that another airline will steal its business, but whether airline profit margins stay thin or if political tensions between China and other countries shrink the number of international flights it can offer.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI touches booking chatbots and crew scheduling tools, not the licensed routes and hub slots that carry the business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: China Eastern and Air China. Both bigger state carriers compete for the same hubs and long-haul slots, but neither can take Xiamen's CAAC route licenses or SkyTeam seat. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. CAAC-issued route licenses, slots at Xiamen Gaoqi and other capacity-capped airports, SkyTeam membership since 2012, and China Southern's state-backed balance sheet.

Questions people ask
Is Xiamen Airlines profitable in 2026?
Xiamen Airlines does not publish standalone financials. Its parent, China Southern Airlines, reported group net profit of RMB 855 million for FY2025, reversing a RMB 1.769 billion loss in FY2024, while sister carriers China Eastern and Air China both stayed in the red.
Who owns Xiamen Airlines?
Xiamen Airlines is majority owned by China Southern Airlines Corporation (reported as 51 to 55 percent), with Xiamen C&D Group holding 34 percent and Fujian Investment and Development Group holding 11 percent, per Wikipedia as of 2026-07-09. It is not independently listed.
Could AI replace Xiamen Airlines?

Within China's state aviation system, its closest peers are China Eastern and Air China, the other two of China's Big Three, both of which posted FY2025 net losses (RMB 1.95bn and RMB 3.5bn respectively) while Xiamen's parent China Southern returned to profit, per airinsight.com, 2026-03-31.
How many people does Xiamen Airlines employ?
