The call

Xueda survived China's tutoring crackdown by moving into vocational and personalized education, but bigger rivals are already shipping the AI tutoring tools it has not matched.

Xueda Education teaches one-on-one tutoring and vocational training to students in China. Its main problem is that bigger competitors like TAL and Yuanfudao have already released AI tutoring machines and smart learning devices in 2025, while Xueda has not released anything similar, making it hard for Xueda to keep students when families can use cheaper or smarter AI tools instead. The one thing that could save Xueda is if it launches its own AI tutoring product soon or if its vocational training side suddenly starts growing much faster than its regular tutoring business.

Why
01
AI pressure: TAL Education's MathGPT/AI Thinkie/X5 and Yuanfudao's Xiaoyuan AI Learning Machine. Rivals already sell AI tutoring devices and adaptive platforms; Xueda has shipped no comparable AI product in 18 months. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: TAL Education Group. TAL grew revenue 33.7% and net income 527% while pushing AI hardware into the same tutoring market Xueda serves. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its shift into vocational training and non-curriculum tutoring sidesteps the 2021 ban, but that segment is still unproven as a growth engine.

Questions people ask
Is Xueda Education profitable in 2025?
Yes. Xueda (Xiamen) Education Technology Group posted FY2025 revenue of about 3.23 billion yuan, up 15.84 percent year over year, continuing its recovery from a 536 million yuan net loss in 2021 after China's Double Reduction crackdown, per data dated 2026-06-28.
Could AI replace Xueda's tutors?
Xueda's core one-on-one tutoring is directly exposed. Rivals TAL Education and Yuanfudao already shipped AI tutoring products, MathGPT, AI Thinkie, X5 devices and the Xiaoyuan AI Learning Machine, in 2025, while no comparable Xueda AI product has been found in the past 18 months.
Who owns Xueda Education now?
Xueda is publicly traded on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as 000526.SZ, Xueda (Xiamen) Education Technology Group, renamed from Xiamen Unigroup Xue Co., Ltd. in April 2021, after Tsinghua Unigroup took the original NYSE-listed Xueda private for about 350 million dollars in 2016.
Is TAL Education a bigger threat to Xueda than New Oriental?
Yes. TAL's revenue grew 33.7 percent past 3 billion dollars with net income up 527 percent year over year in its fiscal 2026, and it shipped AI tutoring hardware in 2025, dwarfing Xueda's roughly 3.23 billion yuan FY2025 revenue.
Did China's Double Reduction policy kill Xueda Education?
No, but it nearly did. Xueda posted a 536 million yuan net loss in FY2021 when the July 2021 Double Reduction policy banned for-profit K-12 curriculum tutoring; the company survived by pivoting to non-curriculum, vocational, and digital education, returning to 154 million yuan net income by FY2023.
