The call

York has shipped satellites and grown revenue fast, but almost all of that revenue traces back to one government customer whose next award is in dispute.

York Space Systems manufactures small satellites quickly and affordably, selling most of its production to the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA), a Pentagon division building a new satellite network. Big competitors like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are also bidding on the same contracts, and Lockheed recently bought Terran Orbital, a company very similar to York, to compete directly. The company's real problem is not that what it does is hard to copy, it is that its survival depends on the Pentagon keeping and expanding one specific contract; in early 2026, reports surfaced that the Pentagon cut a major contract that was supposed to be most of York's future revenue, which the company disputes but the stock fell 60 percent anyway. The one thing that could change everything is if the Pentagon resolves whether it will keep funding York at the level the company has been counting on, probably visible in earnings results expected around August 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product or agent currently threatens satellite bus manufacturing or launch integration work here. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Lockheed Martin (via Terran Orbital) and Northrop Grumman. Both primes now build competing satellites for the same SDA Transport Layer program York depends on for most of its revenue. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. York delivered its 21 satellites ahead of Lockheed and Northrop on the same SDA contract, a real track record they can point to.
What would change this call
Q2 2026 earnings call (~Aug 2026) discloses Tranche 3 Transport Layer award outcome. Shows whether York keeps or loses the contract described as majority of its revenue.
SEC investigations by Pomerantz, Johnson Fistel, Lowey Dannenberg reach findings or settlement. Would clarify whether Wolfpack's Tranche 3 loss allegations are substantiated.
York reports SDA share of revenue dropping below 50% via new non-SDA or M-CLASS contracts. Would show real customer diversification away from single-agency dependence.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $386.2M, up 52% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • SDA was 'substantially all' of 9M 2025 revenue (2025-09-30)
  • 2026 guidance set at $545M to $595M revenue (2026-03-19)
Named risks
  • Extreme customer concentration; SDA was 'substantially all' of revenue and backlog in 9M 2025. Severity: high
  • Unresolved Wolfpack allegations of lost Tranche 3 award covering 'majority' of revenue, plus multiple securities investigations opened May-July 2026. Severity: high
  • Stock down over 60% from ATH by July 2026, reflecting market doubt on SDA relationship durability. Severity: medium
  • Integration risk from four acquisitions (ATLAS, Orbion, Solestial, ALL.SPACE) completed within under 12 months while still unprofitable. Severity: medium
  • Persistent net losses despite revenue growth ($98.8M loss FY2024, $56M loss 9M2025). Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is York Space Systems profitable?
No. York posted a $98.8M net loss in FY2024 and a $56M net loss for the first nine months of 2025 (vs $73.6M loss in the same 2024 period), even as revenue grew to $386.2M for full-year 2025, per its March 19, 2026 earnings report.
Could AI replace York Space Systems?
Unlikely soon. York's moat is physical: satellite bus manufacturing at claimed capacity of up to 1,000 satellites/year, 74+ flown missions, DoD security clearances, and government backlog (107 satellites by 2027), none of which AI software directly displaces as of 2026.
Who owns York Space Systems?
York went public on the NYSE as YSS via a $34/share IPO on January 28, 2026, raising $629M gross. Pre-IPO, AE Industrial Partners (~$7.5B AUM) was the largest shareholder and retained board nomination rights after listing.
Is York Space Systems a safe company to join right now?
Mixed signal: headcount grew to roughly 571 employees by March 2026 (Revelio Labs), but a May 12, 2026 Wolfpack Research short report alleging loss of a major Pentagon Tranche 3 award triggered investor lawsuits and a stock drop of over 60% by July 2026.
Who is York Space Systems' biggest competitor?
Lockheed Martin, after acquiring direct smallsat peer Terran Orbital, and Northrop Grumman, which co-competes with York on the same SDA Tranche 1 Transport Layer program where York delivered 21 satellites ahead of both incumbents on September 10, 2025.
Did York Space Systems lose a major Pentagon contract?
Unconfirmed as of July 2026. A May 12, 2026 Wolfpack Research short report alleged the Pentagon eliminated a Tranche 3 Transport Layer award representing the 'majority' of York's revenue, prompting multiple securities-law investigations, but York has not conceded the claim in its own disclosures.
