The call

Yutong leads global bus sales on scale and reach, but a live remote-access security probe in the UK and Australia and a first quarterly revenue dip sit alongside its long record of growth.

Yutong makes buses and has sold them worldwide for 60 years, including over 200,000 electric buses. It is hard to beat because it builds buses cheaply, has deep connections with governments, and knows how to get buses approved in different countries, but BYD and other Chinese companies can do almost the same thing at the same low cost. The big question is whether Western countries will ban Yutong buses over reports that they can be controlled remotely without the bus driver knowing, which regulators in the UK and Australia are investigating right now.

Why
01
AI pressure: Autonomous minibus and robotaxi operators (Baidu Apollo, WeRide, Pony.ai). Self-driving shuttles could someday cut demand for driver-operated buses, but city-scale deployment is still years off. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BYD and other Chinese peers (King Long, Zhongtong, Ankai). BYD sells competing e-buses with the same cost and battery supply chain, and has outsold Yutong in some EV-bus years. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Six decades of certifications, service networks, and transit-agency relationships across 100+ countries that new entrants can't quickly replicate.
What would change this call
UK NCSC/DfT and Australian probes into Yutong bus remote-access/kill-switch conclude or a hardware fix is mandated. Shows whether Western regulators clear Yutong or restrict its buses, affecting export growth.
Yutong H1 2026 earnings (around August 2026) show revenue/profit growth resuming or a second straight YoY decline. Confirms whether Q1 2026's dip was a one-off or the start of a sustained slowdown.
Any UK, EU, or Australian government ban or restriction on Yutong buses is announced. Would show Western market access closing off despite Yutong's cost and scale advantages.
Key numbers
  • Q1 2026 revenue CNY 5.91B, down 7.92% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • 2025 bus/coach deliveries: 49,518 units, up 5.54% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • Over 10% global bus market share, ~130,000 vehicles exported (n.d.)
Named risks
  • Multi-country kill-switch/remote-access probes (UK, Australia, Norway) could trigger Western hardware bans. Severity: high
  • Q1 2026 revenue (-7.92% YoY) and profit (-12.69% YoY) decline may extend into H1 2026. Severity: medium
  • BYD and other Chinese peers erode Yutong's EV-bus leadership domestically. Severity: medium
  • EU countervailing duties on Chinese EVs (effective Feb 2026) may raise export costs. Severity: medium
  • Ownership structure ambiguity (state-affiliated vs private characterization) creates due-diligence uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Yutong Bus profitable in 2026?
Yes but growth has slowed. Q1 2026 revenue was CNY 5.91B, down 7.92% year over year, and net profit was CNY 659M, down 12.69% YoY, as of March 31, 2026, reversing 2025's double-digit growth trend.
Who owns Yutong Bus?
Yutong Bus (600066.SH) is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Its controlling shareholder is Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co., Ltd., which held roughly 41.65 to 41.7 percent of shares outstanding as of December 31, 2025, with the rest split among public and institutional investors.
Could AI replace Yutong Bus?
No. Yutong's core business is heavy vehicle manufacturing, safety certification, and a 320-plus company global service network built over 60 years; AI features like its Xiaoyu autonomous shuttle and OTA diagnostics are add-ons, not substitutes for that physical scale.
Is it safe to buy or ride Yutong buses given the kill switch controversy?
It's contested but not yet banned. Norway's Ruter found undisclosed remote access to Yutong e-bus control and battery systems in early 2026, prompting UK and Australian government investigations; as of May 22, 2026, the UK's Secretary of State called the risk 'managed' per its Vehicle Certification Agency.
Who is Yutong Bus's biggest competitor?
Domestically, BYD is Yutong's closest EV-bus rival, sharing similar Chinese battery supply-chain cost advantages; in 2020 Yutong sold 15,940 EV buses versus BYD's 9,025. King Long, Zhongtong, and Ankai are other structural domestic peers.
How many buses has Yutong exported?
Yutong has cumulatively exported nearly 130,000 vehicles to over 100 countries and holds more than 10 percent global bus market share, per the company's own reporting, alongside over 210,000 cumulative new-energy bus sales worldwide.
