Zenbu
Extensible desktop IDE for running multiple AI coding agents in parallel, built on Pi.
Zenbu sits on top of tools it doesn't control, in a room where its former employer just shipped a free version of the same idea.
Zenbu is a tool that lets different AI agents work together by connecting them through a common layer. Right now it is basically a thin wrapper around existing AI tools and models from other companies. Vercel, which is much bigger and already owned by the founder's former employer, has already shipped its own agent connector (HarnessAgent and Vercel Agent), which does similar work and reaches millions of developers automatically through their existing platform. The one thing that could save Zenbu is if developers build plugins specifically for Zenbu's system and those plugins become so useful that people stick with Zenbu even when other companies offer the same core feature, but that has not happened yet and the clock is ticking as other startups and platforms race to build the same thing.
Zenbu.js gains third-party plugins with measurable installs within 2-3 quarters. Would show Zenbu building real lock-in rather than staying a thin shell.
Superset or cmux GitHub star growth and adoption continue to outpace Zenbu over the next year. Would confirm Zenbu losing the developer-attention race within its own cohort.
- Superset (rival YC P26 IDE) has ~11k GitHub stars
- cmux went 0 to 3.5k GitHub stars in two weeks
- Vercel shipped HarnessAgent June 25, 2026
- Vercel bundling free multi-harness agent orchestration directly into its own platform.
- Solo-founder team with no disclosed funding amount limits execution speed against funded rivals.
- Crowded YC P26 batch with several peers showing faster public GitHub adoption.
- Core dependency on Pi, a separately maintained third-party coding-agent harness.
- Product still macOS-only beta as of mid-2026, limiting addressable users.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel (HarnessAgent, Vercel Agent) | losing to | Vercel shipped overlapping multi-harness orchestration June 25 and June 28, 2026 |
| cmux | losing to | cmux grew 0 to 3.5k GitHub stars in two weeks per its March 3, 2026 launch |
| Superset | losing to | Reported roughly 11k GitHub stars as of December 25, 2025 launch |
| Ara, stagewise, Capy, Pentagon | contesting | All are YC-era agent orchestration or control-plane rivals with no clear leader yet |
- Is Zenbu profitable in 2026?
- No revenue figures have been disclosed for Zenbu. As of its June 3, 2026 YC launch, the product was still in beta, macOS-only, and appeared to be run by a solo founder soliciting developer feedback, indicating pre-revenue, pre-scale status.
- Could AI or a bigger platform replace Zenbu?
- Yes, this is a live risk. Vercel, where founder Rob Pruzan previously worked on Next.js, shipped HarnessAgent on June 25, 2026 and Vercel Agent on June 28, 2026, both offering multi-harness coding-agent orchestration that overlaps directly with Zenbu's core feature.
- Who founded Zenbu and what is his background?
- Zenbu was founded by Rob Pruzan, a former software engineer on Vercel's Next.js core team and co-author of the open-source React Scan tool, which has roughly 22,000 GitHub stars and 800,000 weekly installs, per his June 2026 YC company profile.
- Who owns Zenbu and is it independent?
- Zenbu is privately held and founder-led, appearing as 'Zenbu Labs' in company-profile databases. It went through Y Combinator's P26 batch with a launch post on June 3, 2026; no specific funding amount, valuation, or outside investor was found in public sources as of that date.
- Is it risky to join Zenbu as an early employee?
- GitHub commit history under the zenbu-labs org showed nearly all commits from founder Rob Pruzan as of May 30, 2026, suggesting a solo-founder team with no confirmed funding amount, competing against at least five similar YC P26 startups and an incumbent, Vercel, in the same space.
- Who is Zenbu's biggest competitor?
- Vercel is the most direct threat: it shipped HarnessAgent on June 25, 2026 and Vercel Agent on June 28, 2026, both covering multi-agent coding orchestration. Within its own YC P26 batch, Superset and cmux are also cited as showing faster public adoption signals.
