The call

Zepto is growing fast and losing money fast, heading into an IPO at a much lower price while Blinkit pulls further ahead on scale and profit.

Zepto delivers groceries and essentials to your door in minutes from local warehouses, competing directly with Blinkit. The business is not hard to copy: any company with enough cash can build warehouses and hire delivery drivers, which is why Reliance, Amazon, and Tata could all jump in and replicate what Zepto does. Zepto loses billions of rupees every quarter and remains far behind profitable leader Blinkit in both size and profitability, so the one thing that matters most is whether Zepto can stop burning through cash and reach profitability before it runs out of money or investor patience to fund its growth.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mainly shows up inside Zepto as demand forecasting and route planning, not as an outside force eating its orders. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Blinkit (Eternal/Zomato), plus Reliance JioMart and Amazon Now. Blinkit already does 1.3x Zepto's order volume and turned operating profitable while Zepto still loses money on every order. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A dense dark-store network and 47.9M active users give Zepto scale, but nothing stops rivals from copying the model with deeper pockets.
What would change this call
Zepto's IPO pricing lands at or below the $3.5-4.5B pre-money range discussed in July 2026. Would confirm investors see a valuation cut versus the $7B October 2025 mark.
Zepto's loss margin versus revenue stays above 20% through FY27 Q1-Q2 while Blinkit's narrows further. Would show the profitability gap with Blinkit is structural, not temporary.
JioMart or Amazon Now announce major dark-store expansion or price cuts in Zepto's core cities. Would show larger incumbents directly contesting Zepto's customer base.

Questions people ask
Is Zepto profitable in 2026?
No. Zepto's FY26 net loss widened to ₹5,905.19 crore even as revenue more than doubled to ₹22,623.58 crore, as of March 31, 2026. Q4 FY26 loss did narrow to ₹1,538.67 crore from ₹1,831.91 crore a year earlier, but full-year losses grew.
Who is Zepto's biggest competitor?
Blinkit (owned by Eternal, formerly Zomato) is Zepto's main rival. In Q4 FY26 (Jan-Mar 2026) Blinkit logged 273.9M orders and ₹14,386 crore net order value versus Zepto's 210M orders and ₹7,591 crore, and Blinkit is already operationally profitable while Zepto is not.
Is it risky to join Zepto right now?
Attrition is elevated: corporate attrition hit 51.28% in FY26, up from 40.48% in FY25, and blended attrition including gig and operational staff reached 73.22%, per Zepto's own June 2026 IPO filings, alongside notable senior departures.
What valuation is Zepto's IPO targeting?
As of July 18, 2026, anchor investors Norges Bank and Motilal Oswal were set to value Zepto at $4.3 billion pre-money and $5.1 billion post-money, a 27% discount to its $7 billion October 2025 Series H round led by CalPERS.
Could AI replace Zepto's business model?
Unlikely to replace it directly. Zepto uses AI internally for demand forecasting and ad-matching in its retail media business, but its core service is physical dark-store fulfillment with 1,139 stores as of March 31, 2026, which AI does not substitute for.
Is Zepto's IPO getting smaller?
Yes. As of July 17, 2026, reports said Zepto may cut its IPO size by roughly 20%, reducing the fresh raise to about $650-700 million, amid investor pushback on valuation versus the originally planned ₹9,500 crore issue.
