The call

Zhuanzhuan runs a profitable inspection-based resale business inside a market Alibaba's Xianyu already dominates by volume, with an IPO and Alibaba's next move both still pending.

Zhuanzhuan buys and sells used items in China by inspecting them at physical stores, which builds trust and keeps out fakes. It splits the market roughly half and half with Alibaba's Xianyu app, but Alibaba is far richer, owns way more users, and is already building its own inspection system and AI tools to do the same thing. The one thing that could shift this: if Alibaba buys a recycling company or rolls out a heavy inspection network that works as well as Zhuanzhuan's, or if Zhuanzhuan breaks into other countries and proves it can win outside China.

Why
01
AI pressure: Alibaba's AI authentication tools for Xianyu. AI photo-authentication cuts inspection time and cost, letting Xianyu build a rival inspection layer without matching Zhuanzhuan's physical store network. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Alibaba (via Xianyu/Idle Fish). Xianyu already dominates C2C resale and is investing in B2C authenticated inspection with far more capital than Zhuanzhuan. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 1,500 physical inspection stores, proprietary authentication data, and Tencent distribution give Zhuanzhuan a working C2B2C model Xianyu hasn't matched yet.
What would change this call
Alibaba acquires or takes a stake in AiHuiShou, or Xianyu launches large-scale authenticated inspection centers. Alibaba is copying Zhuanzhuan's heavy inspection model at scale, eroding its moat.
Zhuanzhuan files for or completes an HKEX listing within 18 months of August 2025. Confirms financial strength and investor confidence in the post-C2C model.
Zhuanzhuan reports declining share or GMV in authenticated electronics/luxury for two or more quarters. Would show Xianyu or AiHuiShou is successfully taking authenticated-category customers.

Questions people ask
Is Zhuanzhuan profitable in 2026?
Yes. Chinese trade outlet 36Kr reported in December 2025 that Zhuanzhuan first achieved profitability in 2022 and has sustained multi-year profitability since, crediting its heavy inspection model rather than the free C2C listings it shut down in September 2025.
Who owns Zhuanzhuan?
Zhuanzhuan began as a majority-owned unit of 58.com, with Tencent taking a $200 million minority stake in April 2017. 58.com remained majority shareholder through a 2019 Series B, and Xiaomi joined as an investor in a 2021 raise near a $3 billion valuation.
Could AI replace Zhuanzhuan's inspection business?
Zhuanzhuan itself deployed AI photo authentication in early 2026, cutting a 15-minute manual handbag check to near real-time using its proprietary inspection image database, so AI is extending its own moat rather than a threat replacing the company from outside.
Is Zhuanzhuan planning an IPO?
Business of Fashion reported on August 21, 2025 that Zhuanzhuan was plotting a roughly $400 million pre-IPO funding round. In April 2026 it signed a partnership to open an international headquarters in Hong Kong, though no confirmed HKEX listing filing exists yet.
Who is Zhuanzhuan's biggest competitor?
Alibaba's Xianyu (Idle Fish) is Zhuanzhuan's closest rival. Coresight research from January 2023 found the two platforms together hold over 90 percent of China's online fashion recommerce market, with Xianyu named an Alibaba strategic priority and GMV-doubling target set in 2024.
What is Zhuanzhuan's market share in China's secondhand market?
Coresight's January 2023 research found Zhuanzhuan and Alibaba's Xianyu together control over 90 percent of China's online fashion recommerce market, making Zhuanzhuan the clear number two behind Xianyu in a near-duopoly.
