Safe to Join Chegg in 2026? What the Evidence Shows

Chegg's revenue fell 39% in 2025 as free AI replaced paid homework help. What the July 2026 evidence says for anyone considering a job there.

The short answer

Chegg is the most-cited example of a company whose core product was substituted by free AI tools. Our July 2026 assessment placed it among the most exposed companies in its sector, with no structural barrier identified to protect its core business. That is not a prediction of any outcome; it is a summary of the structural evidence as of the assessment date. What follows is that evidence, so you can weigh it yourself.

What Chegg is and what happened to it

Chegg built its business on subscription homework help: students paid for access to a library of roughly 120 million textbook solutions and expert-written answers, plus textbook rental. Distribution ran through Google search. When ChatGPT began answering homework questions for free and Google's AI Overviews started answering them directly on the results page, both sides of that model, the paid product and the traffic funnel, came under pressure at once.

Chegg was the first company to publicly attribute a revenue decline to generative AI, in May 2023, a disclosure that triggered a 48% single-day stock drop. It sued Alphabet over AI Overviews in D.C. federal court in February 2025; the case was still pending as of July 2026.

The numbers a candidate should see

Of the 10,525 companies assessed in the July 2026 review, Chegg stood out for the severity of its revenue decline and the near-total absence of any structural barrier protecting its core business. It was assessed as the most exposed company in its twelve-company peer group of online education businesses, with the steepest revenue decline and the least competitive protection of any peer at the time of assessment.

The financials behind that standing, all from the July 2026 assessment record:

  • FY2025 net revenue was $376.9 million, down 39% year over year per the company's 10-K (filed March 2026). Academic Services, 82% of 2025 revenue, fell 43%.
  • Q4 2025 revenue fell 49% year over year to $72.7 million.
  • Q1 2026 revenue was $63.3 million, beating the $61.01 million consensus, with EPS of $0.03, the first positive net income in two years.
  • Q2 2026 guidance issued May 2026 was $49 million to $50 million, another sequential decline.
  • Market capitalization fell from a peak of roughly $14.7 billion in February 2021 to roughly $100 million to $117 million by late June 2026, with shares near $0.85 to $1.13.

What this means for job security specifically

Headcount history matters most for a prospective employee. Chegg cut 22% of staff (about 248 people) in May 2025 and another 45% (about 388 people) in October 2025. Its 10-K reports 595 total employees as of December 31, 2025, down from 1,271 a year earlier. Revelio Labs data as of December 2025 counted 719 employees globally, down 59% from 1,761 in 2023, with roughly 81% based in India. Non-GAAP operating expenses were down 55% year over year in Q1 2026, per CEO comments on the May 2026 earnings call. Two rounds of deep cuts in one year, with the core revenue line still guided down, is why we flagged this company for continued close monitoring.

Leadership and ownership are also in flux. Dan Rosensweig returned as CEO and Executive Chairman on October 27, 2025, the same day the board announced Chegg would remain a standalone public company after a strategic review with Goldman Sachs that had explored a sale or take-private. Galloway Capital Partners disclosed a 5.44% stake in April 2026 and has pushed for separation of the business units. The company regained NYSE minimum-price compliance on June 1, 2026 without executing a reverse split, but shares traded near $0.82 to $0.92 as of July 22, 2026, close to the $1.00 threshold again.

Where the upside case lives

Two parts of the business point the other way. Chegg Skilling (Busuu plus corporate upskilling) generated roughly $70 million in FY2025, growing 9% to 14% year over year, with 2026 guidance for double-digit growth. It is real but small next to a core business declining 43% to 49%. Second, Chegg began pursuing AI data-licensing deals in 2026, aiming to monetize its 120 million-answer library with model builders. What would change this picture: a signed, recurring, multi-year, eight-figure-plus licensing contract with a named AI company would reprice that library as an ongoing asset rather than a one-time sale. As of July 2026, no such contract had been announced.

An investor-letter observation captured in the record is worth quoting for anyone weighing the durability of the core: Eagle Point Capital wrote that Chegg's customers "did not have any switching costs." That, more than any competitor, explains the numbers above.

Dated watch-items you can verify

We never declare an outcome. Instead, here is what the July 2026 assessment flagged as checkable:

  • August 6, 2026: Q2 2026 earnings. Does revenue land near the guided $49 million to $50 million, and does the decline rate slow or accelerate?
  • September 2026: management stated intent (May 2026 earnings call) to fully repay the convertible senior notes. Repayment without new dilutive debt or equity would signal balance-sheet stabilization; the opposite would not.
  • Through late 2026: whether Galloway Capital's push results in an announced separation of Skilling from Academic Services.
  • Ongoing: NYSE minimum-price status if shares slide below $1.00 again, and any announced AI data-licensing contract with recurring terms.

Questions this data answers

Is Chegg still cutting jobs? The most recent cuts in the assessment record were May 2025 (22% of staff) and October 2025 (45%). Headcount fell from 1,271 at end-2024 to 595 by December 31, 2025 per the 10-K. No further layoffs were recorded through the July 2026 assessment, but Q2 2026 guidance of $49-50 million implies continued core shrinkage.

Is Chegg profitable in 2026? Q1 2026 delivered EPS of $0.03, the first positive net income in two years, driven largely by a 55% year-over-year cut in non-GAAP operating expenses. FY2025 as a whole was a loss on revenue down 39%, so profitability so far reflects cost cuts more than revenue recovery.

Did AI really cause Chegg's decline? Chegg's own management first attributed the decline to ChatGPT in May 2023, and the company sued Google over AI Overviews in February 2025. Academic Services revenue fell 43% in FY2025, and an investor letter from Eagle Point Capital noted that Chegg's customers had zero switching costs, which helps explain how quickly free AI substitutes took share.

Is Chegg being acquired? No, as of the July 2026 assessment. After a 2025 strategic review with Goldman Sachs, the board announced on October 27, 2025 that Chegg would remain standalone, though activist Galloway Capital (5.44% stake, April 2026) continues to push for a breakup of the business units.

What would have to change for the picture to improve? For this picture to improve, we'd want to see a recurring multi-year AI data-licensing deal for the 120 million-answer library, Skilling growth accelerating well past its 9-14% rate with enterprise lock-in, or a material win or settlement in the pending Google antitrust case. None had occurred as of July 2026.
