Durability Ranking: How 209 French Companies Stack Up
Of 209 French companies assessed July 2026, 43 rate Hard to displace and 90 losing its protection. Where the pressure sits, from luxury to AI startups.
France is a study in contrasts. Its industrial and luxury giants show some of the strongest durability profiles among the companies we assessed, while a layer of digital platforms and AI-native startups underneath them faces some of the heaviest competitive pressure we track. This ranking draws on the WillItSurvive assessment of 10,525 companies assessed in July 2026, of which 209 are French.
A note on method before the numbers: this ranking is built on dated financials, named customer and competitor moves, and market events for each company, checked against public sources. We never declare an outcome for any company. Everything forward-looking here is a dated watch-item you can check yourself.
The headline distribution
Of the 209 French companies assessed in July 2026, 43 rate Hard to displace, 30 defensible for now, 29 protection under test, 90 losing its protection, and 17 Little protection left. That means 90 of 209 French companies assessed in July 2026, or 43%, sit in the losing its protection tier, the single largest group in the country.
Pressure runs high across the cohort: 35 of the 209 companies assessed in July 2026 fall into the band of heaviest competitive exposure we track. The split is not random. It follows one question: does the company own something AI or a bigger AI-equipped rival cannot copy?
Who rates Hard to displace
The strongest French names sell things that resist digital substitution. Air Liquide supplies oxygen, hydrogen, and specialty gases to factories, hospitals, and chip fabs under long contracts. Hermès has made handcrafted leather goods since 1837 with near-total pricing control. EDF runs nuclear plants and grids for 41 million customers. BNP Paribas is Europe's largest bank by assets with relationships across 64 countries. Safran, Vinci, and Alan round out the group facing the least competitive pressure in the French cohort.
Alongside them: L'Oréal, Chanel, TotalEnergies, Danone, Sanofi, AXA, Schneider Electric, Legrand, Dassault Aviation, Naval Group, Dassault Systèmes, Thales, CMA CGM, Orange, Iliad, Bouygues Telecom, Engie, SNCF, Accor, Eurofins, Bureau Veritas, Sebia, and Sephora all rate Hard to displace. Among younger companies, Doctolib, Back Market, Dataiku, Pennylane, Kpler, Ivalua, Coface, Lectra, and Veja also earn the top tier, showing the label is not reserved for century-old incumbents.
Where the pressure concentrates
Two groups carry most of the trouble.
Middleman platforms. Digital and consumer businesses that depended on being a cheaper or easier intermediary are losing that role. Of the 209 French companies assessed in July 2026, PrestaShop, ManoMano, Showroomprivé, BeReal, SFR, Meero, and Lanvin Group sit at the most exposed end of the country's rankings. PrestaShop is losing new store signups to Shopify at roughly 15 to 1 while its installed base shrinks 15% a year, per the July 2026 assessment. ManoMano's gross merchandise volume is down about 20% since 2022 as Leroy Merlin and Kingfisher marketplaces grow past it. BeReal's daily users fell from about 20 million to roughly 12 million after Instagram launched its Instants feature in May 2026 and Snapchat cloned its dual-camera format. SFR is losing subscribers to Free and Bouygues and is being split up and sold to its own rivals.
AI-native startups. France built real AI products, and they now compete against companies with far more money and distribution. Mistral AI's share of the raw foundation model market fell from 10% to 2% even as its usage tripled, per the July 2026 assessment, squeezed between premium US labs and cheap Chinese models like DeepSeek and Qwen. Nabla, Algolia, Bravi, and Systran are all under mounting pressure because Microsoft, Google, and category leaders fold similar AI features into products customers already use. Nabla in particular competes against Microsoft's Nuance Dragon Copilot and Abridge, both of which already outsell it on major health system deals.
A third squeeze hits labor-based services. Teleperformance's headcount is down 17% since 2023 as agentic AI vendors like Parloa and Ema, plus in-house LLM deployments, automate the call and chat volume it used to sell by the seat. Atos rates protection under test in the July 2026 assessment, its core services unit falling 16.2% organically as Capgemini and hyperscaler sovereign clouds take commodity IT work.
Luxury: not one story
French luxury is often treated as a bloc, but the July 2026 assessments split it. Hermès and Chanel rate Hard to displace. LVMH rates defensible for now as Chinese demand softens. Kering rates losing its protection as Gucci sales fall by double digits, dropping the group to roughly fifth among luxury houses. Lanvin Group rates Little protection left. Craftsmanship and heritage protect the category, but they do not protect every player equally.
Watch-items to verify
These are things to check, not conclusions:
- By June 2027: whether Mistral AI's share of the raw model market recovers from low single digits toward its earlier 10% level, and whether it announces a major enterprise or government contract at scale.
- By December 2026: whether Atos reports another year of organic decline in core services beyond the 16.2% drop already recorded.
- By December 2027: whether ManoMano's GMV recovers to pre-2022 levels, and whether PrestaShop or ManoMano announce a merger, funding round, or ownership change.
- Ongoing: whether Kering's Gucci turnaround shows sales stabilizing rather than continuing double-digit declines.
