The call

Abridge is growing fast and winning KLAS awards while Epic and frontier AI labs circle the same clinical note taking job.

Abridge builds software that records and summarizes conversations between doctors and patients, then turns those notes into electronic health records automatically. Right now it's hard to replace because 300+ hospitals use it, keep it (90-95% stay), and rated it the best in its category twice. But Epic, the company that sells the main record-keeping system most hospitals already use, is building its own version and could eventually bundle it for free or cheap, making Abridge less necessary. The one thing that could change everything: if lawsuits over patient privacy (like the ones from Sutter, MemorialCare, and Sharp) force Abridge or hospitals to change how they record conversations, doctors might stop using it because it becomes too much hassle.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI or Anthropic shipping a medical scribe agent, plus Epic's native ambient AI. Frontier labs could bundle scribing into general agents; Epic could give ambient AI away free inside the EHR clinicians already use. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Epic Systems. Epic owns the EHR clinicians live in daily and has shipped its own ambient AI feature, though it hasn't pulled meaningful share yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow integration across 300+ health systems, 90-95% clinician retention, and back to back Best in KLAS wins.
What would change this call
Epic's native ambient scribe wins or places highly in KLAS 2027 rankings. Would show Epic converting distribution control into real share against Abridge.
Consent litigation against Sutter, MemorialCare, or Sharp expands to name Abridge or forces workflow changes. Would show legal risk translating into clinician pushback or sales friction.
A major health system (e.g., Kaiser scale) switches from Abridge to a rival scribe or in-house Epic tool. Would show the 90-95% retention figure breaking down under competitive pressure.
Key numbers
  • 300+ health systems live, up from 150 a year prior (2026-06-11)
  • $5.3B valuation after $316M raise (2026-04-01)
  • 100M+ medical conversations processed annually (2026-06-11)
Named risks
  • Patient consent litigation against client health systems (Sutter, MemorialCare, Sharp) could expand and force workflow changes. Severity: high
  • Epic could bundle native ambient AI into EHR distribution and erode Abridge's channel access. Severity: medium
  • Frontier model labs (OpenAI, Anthropic) could ship competing medical scribe products directly. Severity: medium
  • Headcount and valuation data inconsistent across vendors, complicating investor/employee due diligence. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Abridge profitable?
No public profitability data has been disclosed. Abridge is privately held with ARR estimated at ~$100M by May 2025 (Sacra, 2025-06-11) and has raised roughly $812-830M in venture funding through April 2026, suggesting it is still in growth-over-profit mode.
Who owns Abridge?
Abridge is privately held and VC-backed, founded in 2018 by cardiologist Dr. Shiv Rao and Zach Lipton. Major investors include a16z, Khosla Ventures, Elad Gil/IVP, and NVIDIA's NVentures, with a $5.3B valuation as of the June 2025 Series E.
Could AI replace Abridge's product itself?
Abridge's moat is deep Epic EHR integration since 2023, 300+ health-system contracts, and a proprietary dataset from 50M+ annual medical conversations (as of June 2026), which generic frontier models like GPT or Claude alone would struggle to replicate without that distribution and data.
Is Abridge losing ground to Epic?
Epic shipped a native ambient AI scribe (announced Feb 5, 2026) but has not visibly taken market share; KLAS still ranked Abridge #1 for Ambient AI in Feb 2026 while Epic's option was available, per industry reporting.
Who is Abridge's biggest competitor?
Microsoft/Nuance was the prior incumbent in clinical documentation but has reportedly lost ~70% of the ambient scribing market to AI-native entrants like Abridge and Ambience Healthcare, per Menlo Ventures (2025-10-21). Direct rivals include Ambience, Suki AI, and Nabla.
What is Abridge's valuation and funding history?
Abridge raised a $250M Series D at $2.75B valuation in Feb 2025, then a $300M Series E at $5.3B valuation in June 2025, followed by a $316M extension at the same $5.3B valuation in April 2026, per TechCrunch and Yahoo Finance.
