The call

Seegene is rebuilding revenue on GI, HPV, and STI panels after the COVID crash, while the same big diagnostics makers it always competed against keep selling rival panels in its markets.

Seegene designs and sells machines and test kits that quickly diagnose infectious diseases like COVID, flu, and sexually transmitted infections. The company is profitable and its products work well, but Cepheid, Roche, Abbott, and Hologic are much larger competitors selling similar tests, and these rivals have the money and scale to match or beat Seegene's technology. The business recovered nicely after COVID crashed it in 2020, but the real question is whether Seegene can keep growing its non-COVID test business faster than its giant competitors can copy or improve upon what it makes.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models don't run PCR chemistry or handle lab samples, so no AI product currently displaces this testing step. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Cepheid (Danaher), Roche, Abbott, bioMerieux. These bigger diagnostics makers already sell competing multiplex syndromic panels in the same hospitals and labs today. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FDA/CE clearances, patented DPO/TOCE/MuDT chemistry, and an installed base of instruments locked into Seegene's kits.
What would change this call
Seegene's non-respiratory (GI/HPV/STI) panel growth in Q2/H1 2026 earnings falls below 30% for two straight quarters. Would show the growth story is stalling before it offsets respiratory test decline.
Roche, Cepheid, or Abbott launches a high-multiplex syndromic panel priced near Seegene's level within the next year. Would show a major incumbent directly targeting Seegene's core price/performance niche.
Seegene's stock price and analyst commentary around the August 2026 Global Million Clinical Study data release. Would show whether real-world data translates into visible adoption or investor confidence gains.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue 474.23B KRW, up 14.5% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • Q1 2026 revenue 129.1B KRW, up 11.3% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • Q1 2026 operating profit up 58.6% YoY to 23.6B KRW (2026-03-31)
Named risks
  • Revenue remains far below 2020 COVID peak of $957M despite recent double-digit growth. Severity: medium
  • Direct competition from larger incumbents (Roche, Abbott, Danaher/Cepheid, bioMerieux, Hologic) with greater scale. Severity: high
  • Global headcount declined about 18% from 2023 to end 2025, signaling contraction pressure. Severity: medium
  • Shareholder activism over depressed share price could resurface, pressuring management decisions. Severity: low
  • Integration execution risk from Dandi Mecca acquisition and Werfen joint venture ongoing through 2026. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Seegene in financial trouble?
Seegene suffered a severe crash after the pandemic, with FY2023 revenue falling to ₩367.4 billion and an operating loss of ₩486.2 billion, but it has since returned to profitability. FY2025 operating profit came in between ₩34.5 and 60.0 billion on revenue of ₩474.2 billion (about $355M), and Q1 2026 operating profit grew 59% year over year, suggesting the immediate crisis has eased even though the company remains a smaller player.
Who are Seegene's biggest competitors?
Seegene's main competitors are Danaher's BioFire FilmArray, which dominates US syndromic PCR testing with a large installed base, along with Roche Diagnostics and Abbott Laboratories, which hold most of the remaining molecular diagnostics share. QIAGEN also competes directly in the same multiplex syndromic-PCR segment. Together these rivals hold an estimated 60% of the molecular diagnostics market, leaving Seegene as a smaller challenger as of the July 2026 assessment.
Is Seegene at risk from AI?
AI does not appear to be a direct threat to Seegene right now; the assessment lists its AI threat status as not-applicable because no AI product currently displaces PCR test kits. AI-driven test interpretation and lab automation are emerging in diagnostics, but as of the July 2026 assessment this is not one of Seegene's identified pressure points.
Could a larger company just copy what Seegene does?
Direct copying is only partially possible. Seegene holds patented multiplex PCR chemistry and regulatory approvals across many countries, which the July 2026 assessment flags as a shield. However, this protection rests mainly on its expanded test menu covering COVID-era panels and broader syndromic infection testing rather than any pricing or distribution advantage over larger rivals like Roche, Abbott, and Danaher's BioFire, so the moat is moderate rather than strong.
What should I watch to see if Seegene is turning around?
Two dated checkpoints matter: Seegene's H1/Q2 2026 earnings report, due by August 31, 2026, will show whether it posts a third consecutive profitable quarter after Q1 2026's 59% year-over-year operating profit growth. By December 31, 2026, it is also worth checking whether its CURECA and STAgora pilot programs have converted into signed hospital contracts with reported revenue.
